Wedding Weight-Loss: Week Six

Ever feel like you need a vacation from your vacation? After a wonderful weekend in North Carolina (more on that below!), I was exhausted — just another day off from work would've been amazing. Here, the most important lessons I learned this week:

If you fall off the wagon, get yourself back on track as soon as possible. Rene and I had the best time exploring the city of Charlotte, going out, and seeing his great family to celebrate his father’s 80th birthday in North Carolina. It was a weekend I will not forget, but I sure hope my body does after all of the food and alcohol I consumed. Unfortunately, I did not eat too well. I had fast food (gross!), comfort food (fried chicken and macaroni and cheese), and bagels and eggs for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. I drank tequila, rum, and wine on Friday and Saturday, too. I was just a disaster all weekend. I did have fun, and I got myself back on track as soon as we returned home. For dinner Sunday night, Rene and I ate sashimi and salads for dinner, so at least I had one healthy meal that weekend!

I definitely felt better Tuesday morning after eating well and working out on Monday — I felt like I burned off some of the many calories consumed over the weekend.

Wedding Weight-Loss: Avoiding Temptation

When it comes to my diet, two of the biggest tests of my willpower are the free goodies at work and going out for drinks with friends.

In my office, we have a huge kitchen stocked with everything you could ever imagine, and it’s so hard to stay away. Look at the snack wall — and this is only half of the food we have here!

To keep myself from snacking all day, I've been drinking ice water throughout the day — I keep a big cup on my desk filled with ice water at all times. This helps fill me up, and it also helps me get through these humid days!

Tuesday was one of my best friend's birthdays, so a few of us decided to go out for drinks later in the week. I recently discovered Smirnoff Sorbet Light vodka — it only has 78 calories per serving, compared to about 100 in regular flavored vodkas. I added some fresh raspberries and club soda; it was so good.

Surviving a Holiday Weekend on a Diet

Hope you all had a great Fourth of July weekend! My week started off with wonderful weight-loss news and a killer new workout plan. I regrettably overindulged a bit on the 4th, but I got myself right back on track the next day. There’s no stopping me from here!

Monday, July 1
I had an awesome workout with Bonne Marcus on Saturday. Because I didn’t see her last week, I hadn't been weighed in two weeks. When I got on the scale, I was down six pounds! I was completely overjoyed, and I'm even more motivated now that I know this is working. Bonne also took my measurements for the first time since our first workout nine weeks ago, and I'm down one inch off my arm and waist and a half inch off my thigh and hips. I was so happy, I can’t even explain the feeling!

Bonne gave us a new workout this week — and, thank god, there are no step ups! Rene had some trouble breathing in the middle of the routine and had to sit down and rest after 40 minutes. He needs to learn to breathe through his nose and not hold his breathe in order to keep his heart rate down. Some of the new moves in this routine incorporated the stability ball and the medicine ball, which made it fun but even more difficult.

By the time we were done, Bonne had to literally peel us off the floor:

Wedding Weight-Loss: Week Three

This week was filled with firsts, challenges and triumphs as part of my ongoing mission to slim down and get in shape for my wedding day. Here, an inside look at my eating and exercise diaries.

Monday, June 24
I had my usual breakfast this morning of two egg whites and a skim latte. I brought a homemade veggie burger and sweet potato fries for lunch. The fries are amazing! Here's how I make them: I peel and cut up sweet potatoes; I sprinkle some salt, pepper and olive oil on them; then I pop them in the oven for about 40 minutes.

For dinner, my meal was even better. I made Butternut Squash Pasta and Sausage, a recipe I found on my favorite website, skinnytaste.com. You couldn't even tell the creaminess came from a vegetable.

My fiancé Rene and I went for a half-hour walk after dinner and did some jogging, too. My shins were really bothering me but I pushed through it anyway. Luckily, Rene's back is feeling much better! P.S. Next time I need to remember to wear bug spray — I got eaten alive out there.

Tuesday, June 25
My wake-up call was at 4:45 a.m. to do my workout from Bonne Marcus because I knew I wouldn’t have time to exercise at night. I woke up in excruciating pain with terrible shin splints. It hurt just to walk down the stairs to let the dogs out. Not good!

7 Tips for Losing Weight Before the Wedding

Back to the grind today! Here are a few lessons learned from the past week on my wedding weight-loss program.

Get rid of sore muscles with light exercise.
Monday morning, I was still so sore from Saturday’s workout with Bonne Marcus — I could still barely get out of bed, let alone walk down the stairs. Every time I got up from my desk chair at work, it took a few seconds to get my legs to move! Bonne told me to just do some abs tonight and try some light cardio to help bring fresh oxygenated blood to my muscles, which are sore from lactic acid buildup.

Getting home from work was a disaster, thanks to a train derailment on the Long Island Railroad – all trains were cancelled, and I didn’t get home until 9 p.m., so that light cardio was not happening. I did do 50 crunches and 20 side crunches before I got in bed, so at least I did something! And when I woke up the following morning, I wasn’t nearly as sore anymore. Thank God! I thought I was never going to feel better.

You can still eat your favorite foods; just in smaller portions.
After Monday’s nightmare commute, we needed a quick and easy dinner. We ordered Chinese, and I ate just a few pieces of Sesame Chicken with brown rice.

Now more than ever before, fitness information is available wherever we turn. Whether it's found on TV, in books, online, or even from your best friend, information about fitness and health is constantly being thrown at us. As a trainer, I’ve discovered that most of my clients suffer not from a lack of information but from too much of it. Research-based info gets confused with popular belief; one person’s facts get confused with another’s outdated beliefs. Pretty soon, we do not know what to believe, and sometimes, it’s far easier to just give up. If you want to maximize your fitness program, it’s going to take the correct information. So let’s review some of the most common fitness mistakes and myths that can be easily avoided.

Wedding Weight-Loss: The Beginning of the Road

Happy Monday, all! This is my first blog post on my long road to dropping the extra pounds. I had a very busy weekend consisting of friends' birthdays, BBQs, and booze, where I ate and drank way more than I should have. It’s time to get back on track and whip myself into shape!

Quick Tips:

Prep your meals on the weekend. Last Friday, I wrote down my grocery list with all of the meals I planned on making for the week. I’m obsessively organized, so this is a great way for me to make sure I’m eating healthy. Plus, I save money at the same time. On Sunday, I made my and Rene’s lunches for the week, chopping up all my fruits and veggies and packing them out into small snack bags for the week. I’m not messing around!

Count calories (without going crazy). I’m using the app called MyFitnessPal to track everything I eat. It's awesome because I put my weight and height in, and it tells me how many calories I’m allowed for the day (right now, I'm allowed 1370).

Meet Jen, Our Weight-Loss Blogger

jennifer crow

My name is Jennifer Crow (soon to be Mrs. Galarza), but you can call me Jen. I’m 25 years old, I currently live in Levittown, New York with my very handsome fiancé and our two crazy big dogs — and I’m overweight.

My fiancé Rene and I met and became friends eight years ago, when we worked together for a sports marketing company. A few years later, we started casually dating. I finally got sick of the random hang outs with no title and told him I was done. That day, September 19th, 2011, he told me he wanted to be with me, and from that day on we have been inseparable.

He proposed on February 8, 2013. We went to Pocono Palace in Cove Haven, PA for a romantic weekend away (yes, we had one of those rooms you see on TV with the champagne glass bath tub). It was a little cheesy but super romantic and just what we needed. When we arrived to our room, I went in the bathroom to shower and when I came out (completely naked, might I add!) Rene was down on one knee. The bed was covered in rose petals that said, “Will you marry me?” He told me how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. It was absolutely perfect (and so is my ring!).
