Etiquette Q&A: "Who Should Lift the Wedding Veil?"

Q. "I plan on wearing a blusher veil and would like to know who should lift it — my dad or my fiancé?"

A. Good question. But first, a fun fact: The blusher veil dates back to ancient times when a bride would cover her face to ward off evil spirits, hide from kidnappers or prevent the groom from seeing her if it was an arranged marriage. Luckily, times have changed and wearing a blusher today is simply a style choice.

Tip of the Day: "Often, in an effort to please everyone, couples will do each cake tier in a different flavor. However, what they aren't taking into account is that as the tiers rise, the servings each tier will yield decreases drastically," says Marina Sousa from Just Cake. Also, the more flavors you have, the more apt guests are to go back for seconds.

She recommends limiting your cake to two different flavors (one choice for both you and your groom!) for ease of serving.

Tip of the Day: "Wear the ballroom, don’t let it wear you. It is important to create enough drama so that the room takes on the essence of the wedding aesthetic, not the other way around," says Alexandra Wise from Blush Botanicals. She advises creating a dramatic focal point in the room. For example, in this ballroom with very high ceilings, she utilized a 15-foot tree dripping in orchids and crystals atop a large bar to achieve a wow-worthy effect.

Tip of the Day: No matter how impressive a florist’s photos are, you must see a mock-up to determine if they can truly bring your vision to life. "Most floral designers will include a mock-up if you meet a certain minimum, while others will only do one at an additional cost. If you’re the type of bride who needs to see it beforehand so you know you love it, then be sure your florist includes a prototype as part of their package," says Carissa Jones from JL DESIGNS.

This gives you both the chance to make any necessary adjustments long before the big day and find out how they will impact your budget.
