Missed our live Facebook chat yesterday with David Tutera? BG fans all the way from Mississippi to the Philippines joined together to talk one-on-one with our July/August cover star!
For one hour, they were on a first-name basis with David, submitting hundreds of their most pressing wedding questions —from emergencies ("I was laid off from my job") to style queries ("Are cowboy boots okay?") — until he jetted off to meet with a new client and tape an episode of My Fair Wedding, now in season six. Brides, moms, and single fans were all grateful for the advice: "Thank you soo much, seeing the 'David Tutera replied to your comment' status notification just now made my day! ♥ you!" said Laura DeDene.
Here's what we learned:
1. No wedding theme is too far-fetched.
1. Facebook fan Spirit Renee asks: "My fiancé loves Skittles, so I decided I want to have a Skittles wedding. I want my main cake to have layers of the candy in different colors, then I want individual cakes that taste just like the color being shown (e.g. grape-flavored for purple candies, lemon-flavored for yellow candies, etc). How can I make my wedding beautiful? I want it to shine!"
David answers: "Incorporate lots and lots of color. You want to make sure that the candies are just an accent and don't overtake the look of the entire wedding, but you can still have fun with this. Try having bridesmaid bouquets in one bold color. You sound just as sweet as candies, have fun!"
2. How to reinvent an ubiquitous theme and make it your own.
Facebook fan Amy Gronauer asks: "I'm getting married in September. My fiancé and I have decided to go with a vintage country theme, to blend both of our personalities and styles together. How can we make our wedding unique and avoid looking overdone?"
David answers: "I love your concept. You can serve all of your food in Mason jars, from the first course to the entree and even your cake, too. I have done this in the South and it was so fun and unique."
3. Crimson fever is taking over the weddings world.
Facebook fan Grace Gavilanes asks: "What color scheme is hot for summer weddings? I would love something flirty and romantic for my reception."
David answers: "Red is hot, hot, hot! I love that I've been doing so many all-red weddings lately. You can infuse red into your lighting, paper products and flowers. Funny, just this a.m., I was thinking of wearing red to my meeting today..."
4. He hopes that you all wear a veil. Please?
Facebook fan Jessica Leslie asks: "I read somewhere that you think a veil should be worn on the wedding day (minus the blusher), but why? I'm more of a casual flowers-in-my-hair girl, and I just don't see the need for one. Not to mention that I've tried every style of veil and didn't like any of them."
David answers: "Your wedding is the one day in your life when you can wear a veil. I would try one with a simple trim that lies towards the back of your head, before you give up on it. I really hope you wear one!"
5. Who to call to lend a hand with your calligraphy.
Facebook fan Tiffany Travis asks: "I can't afford to get calligraphy services for addressing my wedding invitations; can you suggest an alternative? I would pen them myself, but I love the look of calligraphy and just don't have that skill. Would DIY labels be appropriate, if designed nicely?"
David answers: "I would pen them and practice first. You can also design your own on the computer and have them printed out beautifully, so it's clean, straight, and has an ink in your color scheme to match. I love writing, so I would do it if I were there, ha!"
