How to Get a Bridal Look at Wedding-Related Events

1. Consider embracing an all-white look. When else is it acceptable to dress head-to-stiletto in one hue? This is a great option for BG readers who love the short reception gown trend, but don't have the funds to buy two frocks for their wedding day. If you're dead-set on color, we recommend two chic new bridesmaids collections we've seen recently: White by Vera Wang and the detachable Bari Jay collection. Skeptical? Don't be—no one will know the dress' original intent except us budget-savvy brides...

2. Embellish, embellish, embellish. If your sheath is relatively sleek and simple like mine, juxtapose it with standout accessories for high style at a low price. At first, I was concerned that I didn't have any "real" pieces with diamonds that I could use (minus my engagement ring and basic stud earrings), but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are tons of high-quality costume options for brides that don't look cheap and overdone. I borrowed a crystal-embellished clutch for the occasion and paired it with Geometric Crystal Drop Earrings ($48, anntaylor.com) and a vintage-inspired Scroll Bracelet ($178, robertachiarella.com). Keep the focus on your ears, wrists, and neck so that you don't overshadow your new, dazzling ring.

3. Don't be afraid to DIY. Wedding gown belts and sashes have become a common fixture on bridal market runways, but many of them can set you back in the hundreds. Visit your local craft store and work with a retail rep to select a high-quality fabric in your desired color and material so that you can make your own. I visited MJ Trimmings in Manhattan and selected a yard of dazzling strands for as low as $40.

4. Rent outfits for bashes leading up to the big day. Deep down, you know that you'll probably never slip on that special occasion gown ever again, especially when it's a highly photographed event like your e-party or bridal shower. Try a service like Rent the Runway, which loans out couture designs for a tiny fraction of its total retail cost. I personally tested it out and can vouch that the package safely arrived in time for my event. One of my favorite features is that you can order two different dress sizes for the price of one, that way, your selected style is bound to fit your body.

Minor caveats: Call to make sure that the color you see on the screen actually matches the shipment that arrives at your front door. Also read all of the fine print so that you know exactly when to return it and can avoid unexpected late fees. I ended up not using the Christian Siriano dress I ordered because the color was darker than I thought, but I would definitely order from them again, now that I know to look out for this tip.

5. Don't forget about your groom! His outfit should complement yours without being too matchy-matchy. Considering a non-basic black suit? Jason's was taupe and difficult to accessorize, so a kind salesperson gave us a great tip: find a tux or suit in the store that is similar to the one you have at home, and layer ties on top of it to get a perfect match.
