Since its opening in 1898, countless royals, tycoons, artists, celebrities and plain ole visitors have sighed happily at The Ritz Paris, which Sophia Loren once dubbed “the most romantic hotel in the world” — and Coco Chanel once called home. It could be argued that Paris itself became a popular honeymoon destination because of this hotel, which has long epitomized elegance, privacy and understated glamour. But even grande dames need a little cosmetic help sometimes, so in 2012, the 142-room icon closed its wrought-iron gates for top-to-toe renovation — from which it will emerge in late-2015. Though modern touches and conveniences are being added, the spirit of The Ritz will remain the same, thanks to restored furnishings and artwork, and the work of dozens of skilled artisans. Intimate salons, classical gardens and the private mansion feel will still prevail — making this honeymoon classic as romantic as ever.
