Wedding Etiquette Q&A: "How do we seat guests at our ceremony?"

Q: Do we need to explain to our ushers where to seat guests for the ceremony or can they just seat them at random?

A: Usually the first few rows are reserved for the bride's and groom's immediate families, so you'll need to let your ushers know who those people are and to seat them accordingly. Traditionally, the bride's parents sit in the first row on the left (facing the ceremony site), along with her grandparents and siblings. If the bride's parents are divorced and prefer to sit separately, the mother and her husband or partner will sit in the first row while the father and his wife (or partner) sit behind them in the second row. Other special relatives may be seated in the second and third rows. The groom's family is seated in the same manner, but on the right side.
