1. The growing guest list

Most reception expenses, from food and alcohol to the cake, are based on the number of guests you have, so make some tough cuts. For example, eliminate “groups” like your mom’s book club members and “obligation invites,” like your father’s work colleagues who invited your parents to their kids’ weddings.

2. The as-big-as-the-wedding rehearsal dinner

Sure, it’s tempting to invite all of your out-of-town guests to the rehearsal party—after all, they traveled such a long way for you. But that could double or even triple the cost of the dinner, depending on how many extra people there’ll be. Instead, consider asking a friend to host a cocktail party for the out-of-towners in lieu of giving you a gift.

3. “Hidden” fees

Taxes, overtime and delivery charges, and fees for parking valets and washroom attendants aren’t always included in estimates—but they really add up. And then there are tips! Remember to budget for these things before you start writing checks.
