Table Talk

November 5, 2009

Table Talk

The other evening several BG editors and I visited the Wedding Salon bridal show at the Roosevelt Hotel here in NYC. Wedding pros including florists, event planners, cosmetic companies, photographers, fashion designers and caterers, set up their displays so that local brides could seek out great ideas and find resources for their own celebrations. I don't know about you, but I do love the pomp and circumstance, beauty and fantasy that weddings offer and the gorgeous table settings we saw did not disappoint. These ?ber-glamorous displays of creativity were quite fantastic with their towering centerpieces, lush flowers and unique table settings. Here's a look at a few:

White blossoms float in pretty bowls on this gold and white table designed by Frank Alexander for the Mandarin Oriental:
<table border="0" align="center" cellPadding="5" cellSpacing="0" style="width: 30%;

Breakfast with David Tutera

October 28, 2009

Breakfast with David Tutera

Despite the rain in NYC today, my morning was full of sunshine when I met wedding planner extraordinaire, David Tutera, for breakfast. I've known David for years (he reminded me that Bridal Guide gave him one of his first editorials in our July/August 2000 issue) and I have always been a huge fan. His creativity and talent are exceptional, as so many of you may already know from watching David work his magic every Sunday night on WE TV's My Fair Wedding.

If you aren't already addicted to this show then you must tune in. It's fun, inspiring and truly one of the best reality shows on TV. I love seeing how David masterfully transforms a bride's wish into an unforgettable, truly beautiful celebration. But he also does more than that: He helps brides feel more confident about themselves so that they can take what they learn from him beyond the wedding day. David told me that working on this show is one of the “most exciting and gratifying things” he has ever done and it's easy to understand why when you see the looks of joy and gratitude. along with a positive new attitude. from all those lucky brides.

I asked David what most brides want their weddings to be like and he said they all want them to be “different”. But in order to achieve “different” David advises that they “take off the veil” and stop thinking like a bride. Instead, he asks them to think more like a guest and to focus on what might make their friends and family best remember the wedding. He suggests that they tell their guests a story about themselves as a couple and take them on a journey so to speak, to guarantee that something different and unique will emerge. Great advice!

Well, all too soon, our breakfast came to an end and we both headed back to our offices for another busy day. I should let you know that David is coming out with two books in January, which we'll be sure to tell you more about, and that some of the gorgeous gowns from his collection, David Tutera By Faviana, will be featured in our January/February 2010 issue. He is one busy man! In the meantime, enjoy watching David work wonders on My Fair Wedding and think about how you'd like to share your own unique story. and every couple has one!. with your guests.

Posted by Diane at 2:18 p.m.

Registry Tips

October 16, 2009

Registry Tips

Every company or industry has a busy season. For accountants, it's the weeks before the April 15th tax deadline, for retailers it's the holiday season when many stores will open at 7 a.m. so consumers can shop-‘til-they drop until midnight! For bridal magazines, the busiest times are the months of April and October when editors book back-to-back appointments for several weeks in order to see the newest, most fantastic items in the tabletop industry as well as gorgeous gowns in the bridal fashion industry. In fact, around the BG hallways you'll often hear someone say “I'm off to market” and we know exactly what she means.

This past week I've been out covering the Tabletop market with Weddings and Home Editor, Aimée Morgan. Whenever I walk into these showrooms I'm tempted to throw out everything I now use at home and start fresh (and I also wish I lived in a great big house with lots and lots of cabinet space! Oh well, one can dream…). We saw beautiful displays of dinnerware, stemware and flatware that will soon be in the stores and ultimately on your registry lists. You're sure to find something to suit your taste whether it's bold colors, graphic designs, botanical prints or art deco. The hardest part is deciding just what you want. So with registry lists on my mind, here are a few tips to help get you started:

Before setting out to register, pull together some magazine shots of rooms you love. What colors and décor styles appeals to you for the living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen? And don't forget to include your fiancé in this process. Ask him what he likes and work together on deciding how you want to set up your home.

Next, decide what you'll register for. Check out our Appliance Guide and Kitchen Guide for detailed lists of items for the home and use them as references. Again, get your fiancé's input as well. You never know, he may have his heart set on a beer keg!

Do research online to see what stores have to offer. Make a note of what you like, print out photos and take them with you when you visit the store.

Set up a time for you and your fiancé to register. Weekday evenings are a good option (you”ll avoid the weekend crowds) and do work with a consultant initially to guide you. Take your time and plan on going back again. you won't be able to do it all in one visit. Afterward, you can always add more items online.

Don't be afraid to register for a variety of items. You may be having an engagement party, you'll definitely have a bridal shower and of course, guests may also want to use your registry list for the wedding gift. Personally, I love when a couple has an extensive registry list. It gives me lots of options and I'm always surprised at how quickly many of the items get bought!

Consider gifts in ALL price ranges and do register at two or three stores. Your parents, close friends and relatives will no doubt go for the big-ticket items and your work friends may also want to chip in for a more expensive gift. I read in The New York Times recently that Ivanka Trump, who's marrying on October 25th, registered at Tiffany's, Crate & Barrel and Williams-Sonoma. She chose 75 items and the prices ranged from napkins ($3.95 each) and spatulas ($10 each) to a stand mixer priced at $299.95 and a scalloped, footed bowl at $1,350 (maybe Donald Trump, will purchase that one for her!).

As your gifts come in, write your thank-you notes right away. Don't wait until after the wedding when you'll be faced with even more notes to write (your fiancé can help with this, too).

Finally, have fun, enjoy the process and picture you and your husband entertaining family and friends in the years ahead with all the things you love.

Posted by Diane at 7:04 p.m.

Our New Issue

September 28, 2009

Our New Issue

News Flash! The November/December issue hit the newsstands a couple of weeks ago, and in case you haven't yet seen it, be sure to pick up a copy.

The issue is chock full of fantastic ideas for your wedding-you'll find everything you need from gorgeous gowns to the perfect honeymoon destination. In one of my favorite features 'Taming The Big Bad Budget,' you'll discover invaluable tips on how to plan a beautiful wedding without spending a fortune. Now doesn't that sound intriguing?

We also know how overwhelming wedding planning can be (hmmm, who should be on the guest list, how many bridesmaids should I have, when do I send out invitations) so we put together 'The A to Z Planning Guide' and a 'Countdown Calendar'. Trust me, you will be so glad to have all the details spelled out for you.

If you're still dress shopping, take a look at the incredible fashions in 'Summer of Love' and 'Some Like It Hot':

These amazing dresses were photographed on location in Sanibel Island, Florida, and most are priced under $1,000. Plus, in 'Runway Report' you'll get a look at some knockout gowns that were seen on the runways in New York and Chicago. Honestly, if I were getting married today, I don't know how I would choose. There are just too many styles that I fall in love with every season!

Another of my favorite features is 'Wedding Album' in which we showcase couples' weddings from all over the country.

These incredible celebrations are filled with ideas that are sure to inspire you. In fact, all of us here at BG love seeing what brides and grooms planned and I'm always amazed at their creativity and ingenious personal touches. The locations, colors, cakes, flowers and menus may differ for each couple but there is one element they all have in common: to have a wedding that's fun, joyful and memorable for their guests. (If I had been a guest at any of these weddings, I'd say they succeeded!)

Have fun pouring through the issue. Perhaps you'll find your dream dress, discover your perfect honeymoon spot or simply feel a bit more relaxed knowing that we are always looking out for you with the very best wedding advice. And, if there's something we haven't covered in this issue, please let me know. We're here to help!

Posted by Diane at 4:52 p.m.

Elizabeth & Jeremy's Wedding Day

September 18, 2009

Elizabeth & Jeremy's Wedding Day

I went to a fantastic wedding just a few weeks ago. Bridal Guide's IT Manager, Jeremy Bucovetsky, married his lovely fiancé, Elizabeth Blake, on September 5th, and the wedding gods were truly smiling…the sun was shining (somewhat rare in the northeast these days) and the weather was picture-perfect. And what a swell party it was! In fact, this 1920s, Deco-themed celebration was truly the bee's knees and the cat's meow (I loved how Liz and Jeremy incorporated these phrases onto their RSVP card and their gift-bag tag). Every detail was meticulously planned from the beautifully decorated Community Church where they exchanged their vows to the stately Bourne Mansion on Long Island's south shore where the cocktail hour and reception took place. We were wined and dined with the most incredible food, enjoyed the beauty of the surroundings and danced ‘til dawn (well almost, hitting the hay at 4 a.m. is just about sunrise!). I have to say, their 12-piece band really rocked and the dance floor was packed all night.

You'll read more about this gorgeous wedding in Bridal Guide's March/April 2010 issue (on the newsstands January 19) but for now here's a peek at some of the day's highlights:

The picturesque church in East Williston, Long Island.

Jeremy's niece and nephew, the adorable flower girl, Sophia Rich, and her little brother, the ring bearer, Charlie Rich.

A Groom's Tale

September 1, 2009

A Groom's Tale

Love is in the air! Bridal Guide's very own IT Manager, Jeremy Bucovetsky, is counting the days, hours and minutes before he walks down the aisle with his lovely fiancee, Elizabeth Blake, this Saturday. In fact, Jeremy and Liz first met five years ago at Bridal Guide when Liz was our Assistant Home Design Editor. Theirs was an office romance that started as a friendship. You might want to check out their terrific website, lizandjer.com, to learn more about their romance and wedding plans.

But before Jeremy heads off to wedding land I wanted to discover just what was on his mind right before the big day and ask him about the planning process in general. After all, it's fun to hear the guy's side, too! So here's our little desk side Q&A:

How are you feeling right now, Jeremy, just days away from the wedding?
It's the calm after the storm. Last week was pretty intense. You plan things a certain way and when it comes to crunch time if just one thing goes awry, it's frustrating. But after you get over the hump it's all on cruise control.

Is everything together? Any last-minute details?
Right now I'm working on the transportation. My lovely B-to-B decided on marrying at a church 40 minutes west of the hotel where most of our guests are staying and the reception is 10 minutes away from the hotel so it's logistically challenging. But we've booked these great old-school San Francisco-style trolleys to take our guests back and forth and make it easier for them.

What's your biggest concern?
That the pastor and cantor get along! They're meeting for the first time on the wedding day. Also, I know I will enjoy the day to the fullest, but I'm feeling this nervous excitement about actually getting married. Right now Liz is focused on the wedding, but for me it's about the marriage and our life together.

What are you most looking forward to?
Seeing Liz in her dress. I know what she's gone through to find her dress and she's ecstatic about it. She's wearing a Jenny Packham gown but I have no idea what it looks like. I will see her for the first time when we have our photos taken at the Westbury Gardens before the ceremony. We planned it so that she'll come out of the house there at the top of the hill and walk towards me as I wait in the garden below.

How would you describe your wedding style?
Our wedding style is sort of Art Deco, 1920s in feel. It's very Gatsby-esque which fits perfectly with the look of our reception site, The Bourne Mansion, on Long Island's south shore.

When did you start planning?
We got engaged in November 2007 but didn't start planning until May 2008. We knew we wanted to marry in early September so we booked our site in June 2008 for a Sept 2009 wedding.

How involved were you in the planning process?
More than I would have wanted! I was hoping for a small wedding because I know the stresses involved in planning having worked at Bridal Guide. But Liz wanted a bigger celebration and found a great wedding planner, Michelle Tucillo of Pink Monkey Events, to help us. During these last three months Michelle's been on top of everything and has kept us on track. Plus, she and Liz had a great time working on the style and decor.

What planning details did you handle on your own?
I took care of all the logistical aspects, worked with the pastor and cantor, set up all the timelines, took care of the seating charts and planned the honeymoon. Liz handled all the aesthetics. She always asked my opinion but it was usually wrong (he says with a grin).

Did you and Liz agree on everything?
No. There was a point about eight weeks ago when it all seemed so overwhelming and we were fighting over everything. But we focused on what was really important and got through it.

What was the biggest planning headache?
The biggest headache is the logistics of having three, semi-far locations and how to educate people on getting around.

What was the easiest planning aspect?
My tuxes! I had good contacts at BG. We're wearing black tuxedos. The groomsmen will wear lavender ties and cummerbunds (to match the color of the bridesmaids' dresses) and I'll wear a black tux with a black bow tie and herringbone vest.

Was there anything you had to compromise on?
It's her day so I was open to pretty much whatever Liz wanted. We did argue on some things that I thought were excessive but Liz was adamant about the look and feel of the wedding and in the end I know it will be beautiful and worth it.

How many guests are attending?
We are having 179 guests. Our initial list was 230 but we knew we had to cut it down. It wasn't easy and there are still some friends I would've liked to invite but we had to set some rules for ourselves. We decided on no kids under 10, no 'plus ones' unless the couple's been dating for more than six months, and no one that we haven't seen or spoken to in eight months. That helped but it wasn't easy.

What about the seating chart?
The seating was difficult as well. There are varying table sizes and it was like trying to figure out a jigsaw puzzle. Also, people were telling us whom they wanted to sit with and there is a couple coming that really doesn't know anyone so we had to figure out a good table for them.

What was your favorite part about the planning process?
Working on the honeymoon! It's going to be great. We are leaving NYC for Paris where we'll spend the day, have dinner there and then fly late that night to Johannesburg, Africa, where we'll take a small flight to Richard's Bay to the Phinda Reserve. We'll be on safari there for a week. This is the 'adventure part' of our honeymoon. Then we'll fly back to Paris for a small layover before heading to NYC where we'll spend one day. Then we fly to Mexico where we'll stay at The Tides on the Riviera Maya for the relaxation part of the honeymoon.

Do you have any advice for grooms?
She's always right, even when she's wrong because you're not going to win! (again with a big grin.)

Any advice for couples that just got engaged?
Really consider the eloping option! But I'm sure I'll take back those words after Saturday. I am really excited about the wedding and can't wait to marry Liz.

And we're excited for you, too, Jeremy. Congratulations to you and Liz! I know it will be a great day and I can't wait to be a part of your wonderful celebration. So stay tuned, lovely readers, for more news on what promises to be a spectacular wedding.

Posted by Diane at 3:42 p.m.

The Money Talk

August 28, 2009

The Money Talk

I'm curious. Have you spoken to you fiance about finances? And I'm not referring to how much money you have to spend on the wedding. I mean a real sit-down, honest discussion of your attitudes about money. No? Well, it might be a good idea to do so. A recent article in The New York Times cited the results of a new study stating that even though most people tend to marry partners who 'look, sound and act as they do,' when it comes to money they gravitate toward their opposite. (Go figure!) In other words, spenders find savers appealing and vice versa. But, and there's always a 'but', at least they do initially. The study claims that as the marriage progresses, it's the fights and squabbles and disagreements about how money is handled that causes most marriages to run into difficulty. Yikes!

Now, you certainly don't want to even entertain that thought as you happily plan for the wedding! So forewarned is forearmed, as they say, and what better time is there than now to discuss your financial goals and plan for the future with your FH? Perhaps you want to purchase a home soon after you marry but you still have student loans that need to be paid off. Or you may both want to take wonderful yearly vacations. You may even want to be a stay-at-home mom one day. Whatever your wishes and dreams are, plan them together and decide just how much money you need to save every month to meet your goals (and don't forget about socking some $$$ away for retirement, too). The more in sync the two of you are when it comes to spending and saving, the happier you'll be in the long run. You both want to be on the same page when it comes to your financial well being as a couple, and you definitely want to avoid those nasty fights!

On a lighter note, let's say an extra $1,000 suddenly became available for your wedding. How would you spend it? Toward the dress? Music? Venue? Honeymoon? It's fun to dream-wouldn't we all love to win the lottery!-so let me know where your extra $1,000 would go.

Posted by Diane at 9:39 a.m.

Name Change

August 19, 2009

Name Change

The other day while listening to the radio, I heard a report stating that according to a recent nationwide survey, 70% of Americans believe that a woman should change her last name to her husband's after marrying, and 50% believe it should be the law! OK, now that's going a little too far. Whatever happened to personal choice? Freedom of expression?

Of course, name changing is not as big a deal as it was years ago in the aftermath of the feminist movement. Back then many just-married ladies opted not to change their names in the interest of making a statement about preserving their own independence and identity. But today, most brides consider it a non-issue and can't wait to be called Mrs.

I'm curious, though, how many of you plan to keep your current name professionally? I know quite a few women who have done so, and it seems to make things easier for them not to have to notify hundreds who know them professionally by their pre-marriage name. Other married career women have tried hyphenating their last names with their husband's and then eventually just adopted his last name as more business associates became familiar with it.

Since most of you will be changing your last name I thought I'd offer some helpful tips on just what you need to do. It's amazing how many places need to be notified of a name change so here we go:

Change your Social Security card: Visit your nearest Social Security office, go online or call 800-772-1213 for details.

Change your driver's license: Go to your Department of Motor Vehicles to fill out a change-of-name request form and bring your current driver's license and marriage license.

Change your passport: Now, this process requires your marriage license and can take about six weeks so when making your honeymoon travel reservations use your name on your current passport. To download the name-change passport forms you'll need, go to travel.state.gov/passport/get/correcting/correcting_2654.html. Send the completed forms back with your old passport, two new passport-sized photos, your marriage license and any required fees.

Financial institutions/funds/lending companies: Notify banks, credit card companies, the IRS and mortgage or loan companies and change your name on any stocks and bonds, leases and 401(k) retirement funds.

The following should also be notified of your name change:

Insurance companies (health, life, auto and home)

Utility companies (phone, cable, gas and electric)

Your Employer

Doctors' offices

Magazine subscriptions and club memberships

Voter registration

Post Office

Whew! I think this covers just about everyone. Now, if you're looking at this list and inwardly groaning about all the paperwork and time involved, never fear. Wouldn't you know that there are sites created to help out busy brides like you? One such site to check out is MissNowMrs.com. For $29.95, they will do most of the work for you and save you lots of precious hours. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other concerns, problems or questions.

Posted by Diane at 4:36 p.m.

Personal Touches

August 11, 2009

Personal Touches

Summer is a great time for family gatherings and at one such party I recently attended, I met my brother and sister-in-law's friend, Meredith, a former BB (beautiful bride) who married two years ago and is now happily expecting her first child. When she learned I was the Editor of Bridal Guide, she couldn't wait to share her memories of her wedding day-and trust me, I never get bored hearing about weddings! She told me that it was truly one of the happiest days of her life and that all of the time and effort that went into the planning (she and her husband worked together on all the details) paid off in spades.

One of the details I loved most was Meredith's idea for her three bridesmaids' bouquets. She wanted to do something different and special for each one to celebrate their unique personalities. For instance, one of her maids travels frequently for her job and loves seeing the world so Meredith asked her florist to design a circular bouquet to reflect the globe. Another bridesmaid is more of a creative, free spirit so her bouquet consisted of a number of wildflowers arranged in a looser configuration. And, for the third bridesmaid, whose personality Meredith described as 'vivacious and bubbly', the florist created a bouquet with pops of color throughout, much like little bursts of bubbles! Pretty cool, huh? I'm sure you're also thinking of ways to honor your maids so I wanted to share Meredith's idea. (Her maids, of course, were surprised and touched by her thoughtfulness and loved their flowers.)

If you're looking for other ways to thank your best pals consider some of these ideas: Treat them to mani/pedis before the big day or give them personalized cosmetic bags with some make-up brushes or travel-size cosmetics tucked inside. Monogrammed jewelry boxes, stationery or picture frames are always appreciated, as are spa treats (think gift card, comfy slippers, a robe). And not all their gifts need to be identical. If one friend is into antiques, purchase a collectible for her such as a teacup, cameo brooch or perfume bottle. Perhaps another is a movie buff and would love a collection of movies on DVD or movie theater gift cards. And a beach-lovin' friend will certainly get use out of a monogrammed tote bag filled with a sarong, flip flops and a water bottle. These are just a few fun ways say thank you (without breaking the bank). I'd love to hear what you're planning to give your bridesmaids so let me know!

Posted by Diane at 5:04 p.m.

The pool area was surrounded by tables, chairs and festive white gazebos that would soon house a feast of culinary treats. from antipasto to pastries and everything in between (seafood, caviar, pasta, breads and cheeses, champagne bar, wine bar, etc.)

Even the signature Sandals & Beaches bed was perched poolside:

The theme was a Masquerade Carnavale Party and the décor was appropriately Italiano:

The opening ceremony began with a welcome from Sandals & Beaches CEO, Adam Stewart:

And after receiving congratulations from premiers and prime ministers from the islands of Turks & Caicos, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Antigua, Adam's dad and Chairman and Founder, Gordon “Butch” Stewart, was presented with the Six Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences:

Now, in the world of travel and resorts and hotels, I must tell you that this is a VERY BIG DEAL. In fact, I believe there are only two other hotels in the world that are the recipients of this honor. And in order to receive it, the hotel and or resort must provide impeccable service, luxurious accommodations, and basically be outstanding in every way. Let's just say it's the Oscars of the hotel business and the Mr. Stewarts and their staffs deserve a big shout out for this well-deserved recognition. The resorts are truly “Luxury Included” and are not only beautiful but the staffs are also extremely accommodating, plus it's refreshing to always see a smile on all their faces. So here's to the tireless behind-the-scene workers whose daily efforts ensure that honeymooners and vacationers will enjoy an unforgettable trip-of-a-lifetime (the gentleman standing next to the chef's left side is Don Dagenais, General Manager of Beaches Turks & Caicos who seemed to be everywhere making sure that all the guests were having a great time. We were, Don. Thanks!)

Then it was time to party and enjoy the entertainment. There were synchronized swimmers:

And limber dancers performing in huge globes that floated in the pool:

Acrobats showed off their amazing physical skills:

And the dazzling fireworks display lit up the night sky:

After all this excitement, it was time for the after-party and the crowd headed over to Club Liquid for some late-night dancing:

It was truly a “Grand” Opening celebration and a real treat for me to experience all that a Beaches resort has to offer. It truly is paradise and having a wedding there is certainly something to consider. They have a wedding consultant to handle all of the details and you can even choose a Preston Bailey designed wedding (read all about Preston's Sandals & Beaches weddings in our September/October issue on the newsstands July 14.) In fact, during the weekend of the celebration there were 14 weddings that took place! I met some of the couples and their parents and they couldn't have been happier. They all agreed that it was the perfect place to marry. For more information on a Beaches or Sandals wedding go to beaches.com or sandals.com.

At the Beaches resorts there are so many activities for everyone invited, from the littlest toddler to tweens and teens, as well as plenty of options for honeymooners looking for those much-needed triple Rs “Rest, Relaxation and Romance”. Another bonus is the option of having the Sandals & Beaches exclusive personal butler service. Just imagine, your own butler who will take care of all your requests 24/7. Now, why can't life be like that every day? Well, there's no better time to take advantage of all these magical offerings than on your honeymoon! After all, where else can you find such attention to detail such as these masterful carvings of watermelon and veggies?

Or the special nod to honeymooners that I spotted walking back from the beach:

And on that note, my dear, lovely brides-to-be, I leave you with this image. When you feel like tearing your hair out or screaming out loud just take a moment and focus on what awaits you and your new husband…Paradise…:

Posted by Diane at 3:19 p.m.

Escape to Turks & Caicos

June 10, 2009

Escape to Turks & Caicos Part 1

It's a given: Wedding planning is stressful. Right now you may be wondering who can you possibly cut from your-way-too-big guest list or how can you plan a fitting time that works for all your bridesmaids. Or perhaps the band you wanted is booked or the site you had your heart set on isn't available.

Well, let me take you away for a few minutes from all that high anxiety. Just relax and start thinking about…your honeymoon. And if you're dreaming about blue skies, turquoise waters, white sand and nothing but fun, fun, fun I've got the perfect place. A few weeks ago I was invited to share in the Grand Opening Celebration of the Italian Village & Pirates Island Waterpark at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa. And what a celebration it was! The Italian Village is magnificent: Gorgeous buildings, reminiscent of the finest Italian architecture, surround a half-acre freshwater pool (the largest in the Caribbean) with a giant Jacuzzi and gorgeous fountains. And everything is top notch from the luxurious lobby:

To the spacious guest rooms with the most comfortable king-size beds, flat screen TVs, huge bathrooms, and lots of amenities including a microwave and coffee pot, snacks and a fridge filled with water, juice, wine, champagne and every type of libation.

Oh, and did I mention that the Beaches and Sandals properties are all-inclusive, which means that you can indulge in wine, champagne, snacks, meals, etc. and not have to worry about facing a huge tab at the end of your stay? In fact, I put my wallet in the room safe the day I arrived and took it out the day I left. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner at any restaurant, partake in all kinds of sports activities and, except for personal purchases from the resort stores and spa treatments at the Red Lane Spa, never have to open your wallet. Amazing!

There are also fantastic accommodations for kids, and according to a recent Bridal Guide survey, 20% of you who do have children. Just think, if you marry here, friends and family can also bring their kiddies knowing they will have the time of their lives. Here's a look at the adjoining kids' room with its own play station:

And the best part? Check out these views from my room of the Italian Village and pool below with the cerulean sea beyond:

Feeling a tad more relaxed? There's more! Just steps away from the pool area is the legendary white sand beach of the Turks & Caicos where you can chill on a lounge chair or in a cabana, take a swim or do any one of a gazillion activities ranging from beach volleyball and parasailing to catamaran cruises, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing, diving (one of the best spots in the Caribbean), windsurfing and horseback riding. I've read many a travel story on the Turks & Caicos extolling the beauty of its pristine beaches and vivid blue waters and I can now confirm that those accolades are not hype. Take a look at these glorious sights:

Oh, I forgot to mention that the snorkeling is fabulous. There are regularly scheduled excursions that will take you to a nearby coral reef. I love snorkeling and couldn't wait to try it out. So, donned in full snorkel gear, I dove in to enjoy 30 minutes of blissful, peaceful floating in crystal-clear water, gazing at the underwater sea life. C'est moi below (ok, Jacques Cousteau I'm not…):

After some R&R at the pool or beach you can head over to the Pirates Island Waterpark featuring a Pirate-themed restaurant (of course):

And colorful water slides:

Naturally, this is a great spot for kids but, being a kid-at-heart myself, I never met a water slide I didn't like. So I grabbed one of those big pink tubes, climbed to the top and went slip, slidin' away. Splash! What a blast!

Afterward, you can just sit in the tube and drift along the lazy river for a while forgetting about all those irritating wedding details that once had you so worked up…ah, seems like a distant memory, doesn't it?

But there's so much more to see and do that you won't want to drift along for long. The Italian Village and Waterpark are just two locations to visit at this welcoming resort. In my next post I'll continue my behind-the-scenes tour with stops at the French Village and Caribbean Village. Plus, you'll find out which celebs I spotted at the Pirates Island Waterpark celebration.

Posted by Diane at 11:19 a.m.

Vow Renewal

May 12, 2009

Vow Renewal

I often say that one of the best things about my job is hearing from all of you and having the opportunity to answer your questions. The other day, when lovely BG reader, Brittney, e-mailed me a number of questions about how to plan her vow renewal, I thought, “hmmm, why don't I just speak with Brittney directly” (a whole lot quicker and a lot more personal than writing detailed answers!). Besides, I do love one-on-one conversations and believe me, I learn just as much from you! I'm always so impressed with how considerate you are of your guests' needs and expectations.

Brittney has been married for 3 1/2 years and is planning the type of celebration that she and her husband never had when they wed. They are now the happy and proud parents of two adorable little boys and eager to recognize their five-year anniversary with a vow renewal before all their family and friends. (To learn more about Brittney's story, check out her blog at myadventuresinmommyhood.blogspot.com.) Because their families are on the west coast and east coast she wanted to know if she could send save-the-dates now (yes) and follow up to see who might be able to attend. Having never planned a wedding before, Brittney is eager to get it right and wants to make sure her guests are fully informed. (I suggested she set up a website listing hotel, airline, itinerary, location attractions, etc.)

After speaking with Brittney for some time and discussing her ceremony, reception, processional and theme ideas, I realized that vow renewals are the perfect way to honor your commitment to one another. After all, as Brittney says, “I love my husband even more now.” So, think about having your own vow renewal one day. Many of you will no doubt have families of your own and you may be living in another town or city. But isn't renewing your vows a fantastic way to celebrate your love and marriage? And, if anyone should be planning a vow renewal like Brittney, here are some pointers for you:

Anyone can preside over a vow renewal. It's not a legal ceremony so you don't need a clergy member or judge to preside. If the clergy member who performed your wedding is available, ask him or her to preside. Other options: a close friend, relative or one of your children, or the best man or maid of honor from your wedding.

The ceremony can be customized to your personal specifications and you can choose your readings and musical selections. You can write new vows on your current feelings and years together or simply restate your original wedding vows and exchange rings.

You can wear your original wedding gown (kudos if it still fits!) and ask your husband to wear the same style tuxedo he wore on your wedding day or choose a floor-length evening gown in white, ivory, platinum or any pastel color, a cocktail dress or beautiful dinner suit. If the venue is more casual like a beach or backyard, then you can dress accordingly (sundress or long, flowing skirt and top for you and khaki or gray pants and a blazer for your husband).

Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties

April 16, 2009

Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties

At last! It's a sunny day in NYC after tons of rain and too many gray, gloomy days. Could spring really be on the way? Well, in spite of the weather there have been quite a few bright spots this month. Along with my Fashion Editors, Naima and Maureen, I've seen a gazillion brand spanking-new, gorgeous wedding gowns that I promise, you will love! We spent a weekend in Chicago where designers showed us their latest creations, (love visiting the Windy City) and then zoomed home to walk and taxi all over NYC to view the newest looks from even more designers! You'll soon see these dresses on the pages of Bridal Guide (look for our Sept/Oct and Nov/Dec issues) and right here on bridalguide.com.

In the meantime, results from BG's Wedding & Engagement Survey came across my desk and it was fascinating to see how many of you plan to incorporate a lot of the bridal traditions into your ceremonies and receptions, i.e. not letting your groom see the gown before the ceremony (82%), bridal bouquet toss (86.5%), guest favors (82.4%) and so on. And, of course, before the wedding you and your fiancé will have a bachelor party (76.5%) and a bachelorette bash (75.4%).

This stat reminded me of a radio talk show I listened to just a few weeks ago on this very topic. The question was, if you heard that the bride's fiancé had gone over the line at the bachelor party, would you tell the bride and do you think the wedding should be called off? Hmmm, pretty sticky topic. Some callers said they wouldn't tell her, others said they would and she should call off the wedding because he was bound to cheat during the marriage. One guy wanted to know what “over the line” means (how ‘bout this fellas: picture your fiancé in the room and don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see!). And then there were a number of guys who said that the drunken, debauched bachelor parties weren't for them. In fact, one spent a day golfing with his friends, another planned a dinner at a great restaurant and a groomsman told of a camping trip with his buddies where a game of paintball ensued (the highlight was all the guys blasted the groom at the end. “We had a blast!” he said.)

So, I'm curious, do you think a bride should be informed if her fiancé goes “over the line”? As a future bride, would you want to know and would you call off the wedding? And what is your guy planning for his party? Let me know, I'm sure there are a lot of opinions about this! And if you have any etiquette questions about your bachelorette bash, here are a few party pointers:

Who plans the bachelorette party? Usually it's the maid of honor, the bridesmaids or the bride's core group of friends. even if they're not in the wedding party.

Can I tell my friends what I want without seeming pushy? Yes, if you'd like dinner and drinks at your favorite restaurant, singing at a karaoke bar or a mani/pedi party, let them know. It will make planning easier for them.

How much should I expect my friends to spend? It depends on what they can afford or wish to spend. Don't expect a weekend in Vegas or a weekend cruise if they have student loans to pay, no job or an entry-level position or even other weddings to be in.

Will I need to pick up my own tab? Everyone usually chips in to cover the bride's cost.

When's the best time to have it? Two or three weeks before the wedding is ideal. Avoid the week before the big day. you'll have plenty of other things to do!

Posted by Diane at 1:52 p.m.

A Grand Opening

March 23, 2009

A Grand Opening

I love to shop. I enjoy the hunt for a great bargain, the search for that one fabulous item that will instantly update my wardrobe-and make me feel like a million bucks. And better yet, I just love discovering that a great style is not only in my size but marked down twice with a 20% discount taken at the register! What a coup!

But even if I don't buy a thing, I still enjoy seeing the latest fashions and noticing how dresses, shoes, jewelry, handbags and sportswear are merchandised and displayed. So, needless to say, the recent opening of a David's Bridal store in New York City (their first in Manhattan) was a cause for celebration. On a chilly morning, we gathered in front of the new store on Sixth Avenue and 25th Street to witness the 'unveiling,' aka the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Happily, coffee and donuts were provided to keep us warm and well fed:

A giant tiara and veil covered the front of the store:

And a bevy of 'brides' awaited the start of the festivities-all wearing David's Bridal gowns and wraps, of course:

Robert Walsh, New York City Commissioner of Small Business Services, officially welcomed David's Bridal to the city commenting on how encouraging it was to be celebrating a store opening rather than a closing, in light of the dismal economy:

Commissioner Walsh received a T-shirt from Cindy Freeburn, Vice President of Public Relations for David's Bridal, which he promptly put on.

Bath Junkie

February 27, 2009

Bath Junkie

Although most of my time is spent behind the desk planning the best, must-read issues for you, there are those wonderful occasions when I'm invited to venture out and experience a new product, launch or concept. One such occasion was just the other night when I visited the amazing Bath Junkie store in Manhattan.

Now, I don't know about you, but I just love bath products. All those delicious scrubs, gels, creams and scents instantly conjure up images of a relaxing spa and the chance to take some time to unwind and get pampered. And who doesn't need that?

The geniuses behind the Bath Junkie store are a dynamic mother/daughter team, Judy Zimmer (the mom) and Jocelyn Murray. These two gracious ladies developed the concept of all natural, made-to-order products where customers mix and match literally hundreds of colors and fragrances. And what a blast it was to do that! Check out the huge selection of scented oils:

I was mesmerized as Jocelyn walked us through the cheerful store filled with every imaginable product-from body scrubs to shampoos and conditioners. (They even have scents for the car and home and a super all-purpose cleaning product!).

And what I love about these items is that they're safe for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies, and the prices are completely affordable. Just think, you can give these fortune cookie soaps to guests as favors with your own customized wedding color and inscription inside:

Or you can create gift baskets with any of these products custom scented and colored to your liking. You can even throw a party for your bridesmaids in one of the Bath Junkie stores and have each maid create her own scent. (Right now there are currently 60 stores across the country with 9 more slated to open this year. Just go to bathjunkie.com to find a store near you.)

I have to tell you, I am loving my personal scent (hey, why should celebs like J Lo and Sarah Jessica have all the fun with their own perfumes!). Here are the two fab 'mixologists' adding my scented oils to the exfoliating salt scrub:

And here's a secret: my fragrance is just like Angel by Thierry Mugler but costs soooo much less. I am also now totally addicted to the salt scrub and body dessert moisturizer-honestly, my skin never felt so soft. So, for all of you brides-to-be who definitely deserve some TLC, treat yourselves and your friends to this delightful experience and check out the Bath Junkie-you'll be hooked!

Posted by Diane at 5:12 p.m.

Love the Second Time Around

February 5, 2009

Love the Second Time Around

It's hard to believe that February is already here. I don't know about you, but I'm always a bit stunned whenever I turn the calendar page to a new month asking myself “Where does the time go?” Of course, with our super-busy lives and multiple to-do lists it's a given that tempus fugit!

Now, here's an interesting question posted by lovely BG reader, Joy. If a woman married a year ago, got divorced, and is marrying again, is it proper for her to have another big reception and invite the same guests? Frankly, I don't think so. (And neither did most of the editors I asked in an informal office poll. We may edit a bridal mag but we're realists, too!) Let's face it, love may be sweeter the second time around but it's also expensive for everyone else involved. I'm sure guests spent money on shower and wedding gifts a year ago and to be expected to do the same within such a short span of time is a bit much. especially with most of us being very cautious about spending these days. If I were one of the guests, I would be thrilled that my friend had found love again but not so thrilled that I would be shelling out more mullah. If the bride is determined to have a big, blow out affair then the proper thing to do is not to have another shower and to let guests know that the honor of their presence is the only gift she needs.

Which brings to mind one of my own friends, Donna, whose first wedding had all the works: a bridal shower, a huge reception at a banquet hall with several hundred guests and a large bridal party (including me as a bridesmaid). Fast-forward eleven years later, post-divorce, and Donna is marrying again (yeah!). But this time Donna (certainly not the Prima Donna) doesn't have a shower and her reception for about 70 people (sans bridal party) is held aboard a beautiful yacht that sails around glittering Manhattan at night. It was fun, chic and elegant and in my book, done the right way.

So, let me know how you feel about this or if you've ever encountered a similar situation. And if you have anything on your mind or something I can help you with, please let me know! I love hearing from you.

Posted by Diane at 11:48 a.m.

5 Major Must-Dos for Engaged Couples

January 12, 2009

5 Major Must-Dos for Engaged Couples

Happy New Year! Well, it's been the first full week back at work and things are buzzing here in the BG offices as we write, edit, design and get out another issue (May/June '09). You'll love what we have in store: The issue is filled with lots of gorgeous gowns, beauty tips, money-saving ideas and terrific honeymoon destinations.

But before I go on and on let me extend heartfelt congratulations to all of you newly engaged brides-to-be. After all, the holidays are a big-time proposal period so if you're now happily sporting a dazzler on your ring finger and this is your first visit to bridalguide.com, welcome! I am so excited for you and know that you'll find fantastic info on our website as you plan your wedding in the months ahead.

But first, I'd like to give you my “5 Major Must-Dos for Engaged Couples”. I'm always asked what should be done first and how to go about the planning. So, before you panic over a monumental to-do list or go into a tizzy because everyone is weighing in on what kind of wedding you should have take a deep breath and do the following:

Have the Talk: Plan a time to sit with your fiancé and discuss what type of wedding you both envision. Do you want a small affair, a destination wedding or a big blowout party? What time of year do you have in mind? What type of venue appeals to you? Is a theme wedding important to you? Together, map out the basics and things will start to fall into place.

Budget, Budget, Budget! I can't stress this enough. It's a known fact that weddings are costly and you need to be very practical about what you can realistically afford. Figure out how you will pay for everything. Do you have any money saved? Will you pick up the tab or ask your parents to help out? Depending on how long your engagement period is, decide how much you can both save during that time. And always bank on having to pay more than you originally estimated: Unexpected costs arise and you may find yourself paying a bit more for a dress you love or a photographer whose work you find the best. And don't think that you'll make it all back with cash gifts! Most couples never receive enough money to pay for the reception. So, be smart, be savvy and don't max out your credit cards!

Prioritize: Once you have a clear idea of how much money is available you can start estimating how to divvy up your dollars. For example, if you're both foodies you'll budget more for a great caterer and top-shelf wines and liquors. Or perhaps flowers are your thing and you're willing to spend more on lush blooms. Or you might feel that the music and a venue with a great dance floor is key to a rockin' reception. And fashionistas are more apt to fork over more money for that fab designer dress. So, know what's most important to you and plan accordingly.

Do Your Homework: In other words, research your vendors and venues before you even start making appointments. Ask married friends for references, go online and check out the local pros in your area (or in the city/town you'll marry in). Find out what the prices are for receptions at different sites. Get an idea of who does what and the estimated costs.

Be Flexible: After all is said and done you may have to do some compromising. Not every bride can afford to have the ultimate, no-holds barred mega-bucks wedding.

Breakfast with NYWA

December 17, 2008

Breakfast with NYWA

If you're anything like me, breakfast consists of a quick cup of coffee (or two) as I slap on the makeup and then head out the door. So it was a real treat to be invited as the guest of the dynamic PR mother-daughter team, Diane Terman and Debbie Kerner, to attend a breakfast at the New York Hilton last week. The reason? One of their clients, Tova Borgnine, was receiving an award from the New York Women's Agenda as one of their five '2008 Stars.' Now, many of you may know Tova from her years on QVC selling her eponymous beauty line. She is one fantastic lady and I can attest that all her products are terrific. And even though the hour was a tad early (7:15!) the room was packed and the atmosphere buzzing. The New York Women's Agenda is a fantastic organization dedicated to celebrating women in all fields so that we can 'succeed and affect change' and even shape important public policies. Needless to say, there were some heavy hitters at this event like New York City's Mayor Bloomberg who spoke about his love for his mother and daughters and how all the women in his life keep him in line (good to know Mr. Mayor!):

Next up was the legendary Barbara Walters who commented on the strong relationship she now has with her daughter after going through some very trying times together. She also told us that we have much to look forward to and should continue working at something we love to do. 'Look at me!' she said, 'I'm still going strong at my age!' (True. In fact the 70-something Ms. Walters looks and acts so youthful I wonder what her secret is...hmmm, maybe she's using Tova's products...)

Then Ms. Walters left to do 'The View' where she claimed she would not be able to speak uninterrupted as she just had.

When it was Tova Borgnine's turn to accept her award she spoke from the heart about her mother, and how she came to the USA from Norway with little Tova in tow and worked diligently over the years so that her daughter could have the type of life she never had. With her energy and can-do spirit and her belief in education and hard work, Tova's mother was her inspiration. How proud she would be of her daughter today...

I must say all of the speeches given by the five award recipients were truly inspiring as each one spoke about the influence that their mothers and grandmothers had in their lives. The love, strength and values they learned inspired them to always do their best.

Of course, I thought about my own mom and how much I rely on her common sense and advice and how fortunate I feel just knowing that she's there for me with a love that is constant and truly irreplaceable. (Thanks, Mom!). So during this holiday season, let's embrace all the wonderful women in our lives: our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, future in-laws, cousins, aunts and girlfriends (go bridesmaids). And I'd love to hear about your mom. Is she helping you with the wedding planning? Are you honoring her in any way on the wedding day? If you'd like to do so here are a few suggestions:

Ask her to escort you down the aisle with your dad.

Include one of her favorite flowers in your bouquet or pin one of her brooches onto the handle.

If she loves to sing or plays a musical instrument, ask her to perform during the ceremony. She can also read a verse or give a spiritual reading.

Write a special acknowledgement to your mom and dad in the wedding program.

Make a toast to your parents at the reception thanking them for their love and guidance over the years.

Invite her to lunch or dinner-just the two of you-before the wedding. Perhaps it will be a dress-shopping day where you can both relax, chat, have fun and make a memory she'll cherish forever.

Well, as the holidays fast approach I'd like to wish all of you a wonderful season. Put the wedding planning aside, chill out with family and friends, celebrate with your fiance and enjoy a happy and carefree New Year! See you in '09!

Posted by Diane at 3:46 p.m.

Meeting with the Pros

November 24, 2008

Meeting the Pros

One of the most rewarding things about being the Editor of BG (along with giving you, our readers, all the best info!) is the opportunity to work with the incredibly talented pros in the bridal biz. Yesterday, along with Executive Editor, Susan Schneider and Senior Associate Editor, Elena Mauer, I met with two such dynamos: renowned wedding planner Harriet Katz and the President and CEO of WineChateau.com, Saurabh Abrol. Here's the lovely Ms. Katz and the charming Mr. Abrol in our conference room.

Harriet Katz has planned a gazillion parties-from birthdays and bar mitzvahs to weddings-and she is one of the smartest, savviest people in the business. She is always one step ahead of the curve and thinks about every detail ('Oh, a hurricane is predicted on their wedding day? No problem, let's get sandbags, a tent, etc., etc.'). We could have listened to Harriet's amazing stories for hours! And Saurabh Abrol is an entrepreneurial delight with vision and focus and an admirable knowledge of the wine and liquor industry. Both are also fully aware of the effect the economy is having on everyone, including brides and grooms. We all agreed that although weddings will never go out of style, the nature of the celebrations will change as couples look for ways to keep spending down. We'll be talking to Harriet and Saurabh a lot more and sharing some of their fantastic tips with you in a future issue of Bridal Guide. I'll be sure to let you know.

Of course, what with money (or the lack thereof!) on everyone's minds, I'm curious as to whether you've had to re-think the type of wedding you're having. Let me know what the issues are that you're facing and how you're dealing with paying for the wedding. Are you cutting the guest list? Looking for less expensive venues? Forgoing favors? Or, perhaps you're changing your wedding day to a less costly time of year. Whatever the challenges may be, I'm here to help. In the meantime, be sure to check out our January/February 2009 issue, (on the newsstands now) and take a look at our article 'The Look of Luxe (For Less!). You'll find 75 great tips on how you can give your wedding an elegant look without going into debt. Happy reading!

Posted by Diane at 3:19 p.m.

Going to Market

November 14, 2008

Going to Market

It's been a whirlwind month! Just a few weeks ago I attended the NYC Bridal Fashion Market with BG's tireless (OK, they may beg to differ with me on that point right now!) Fashion Editors, Dana Wagner and Alison Rowe. We literally ran around the city for days, from morning ‘til night, to see what seemed like a gazillion bridal shows and visited showrooms where the newest gowns were presented. It was both exhausting and exhilarating and it never ceases to amaze me how creative these designers are season after season. And, just a day after the fashion market ended, I accompanied our intrepid Associate Home Design Editor, Aimee Morgan, as she made the rounds of tabletop companies to see what's in store for bridal registries. Every time I attend the Tabletop Market, I want to completely re-do my kitchen and purchase all new glassware, table items, flatware, etc. My own stuff looks so passé! Anyway, you'll be seeing lots of fab new items for your registries in upcoming issues of Bridal Guide so be on the lookout.

Of course, it's impossible for you to actually experience some of the fantastic bridal shows on the pages of the magazine, so we have a special surprise in store for you. With our May/June 2009 issue (on the newsstands in mid-March) you'll get a free (don't you just love that word!) CD-ROM featuring all of the bridal shows from the New York market…and there are lots of them with 100s of gorgeous gowns for you to marvel at. Nothing beats actually seeing how a gown looks and moves on the body and you'll get a sense of the runway show atmosphere. just as if you're sitting right in the front row.

I thought it would be great if you also heard from some of the designers themselves on the CD, so last week I visited a few NYC-based designers. First stop was Jane Wang's showroom, where we faced a lobby filled with NYC firemen:

Apparently, an elevator with two women on board dropped a few feet (no injuries, luckily) and about 50 firemen showed up to get them out (very Rescue Me). Let me tell you, what they say about firemen is true: These guys really are cute! But back to business: Here's lovely Jane Wang in her showroom where she told us about the inspiration behind her creations:

And here are a couple of Jane's elegant dresses that reflect her exquisite beadwork and sense of glamour:

Jane was terrific as were our videographers Stephanie McArdle and Vic Losic, pictured here surrounded by all the equipment it takes to get the best picture and sound quality:

Then it was on to Birnbaum & Bullock, two incredibly talented designers who work as a team designing their eponymous line. This season they introduced two new lines, the Steven Birnbaum and Robert Bullock collections, and each line has a very distinctive look that beautifully showcases their design aesthetic. Here's the dynamic duo: that's Steven Birnbaum on the left and Robert Bullock on the right:

And these three beauties are just a sampling of their fantastic creations:

After interviewing Steven and Robert, we headed to the showroom of Junko Yoshioka who first launched her bridal line six years ago and has seen her business grow over the years. It's no wonder: Junko's runway show was a huge hit as dress after dress highlighted her talent for creating sophisticated gowns with a keen sense of individual style. Here are a few displayed in her showroom (don't you just love that chic coat?):

After our chat with Junko, we visited the Anna Maier-Ulla Maija Couture showroom to talk with designers Charles W. Bunstine II and Allison Fletcher:

Charles and Allison create exquisite gowns and are known for their luxe fabrications, embroidery and draping. Here are just two examples of their craftsmanship:

The following morning, we visited the Priscilla of Boston store where gowns from the Priscilla of Boston collection, Platinum for Priscilla of Boston, Melissa Sweet, Reverie by Melissa Sweet and Vineyard Collection can be bought. This is the Priscilla of Boston group's PR whiz and all around dynamo Deborah Hughes (Thanks, Deborah, for setting up all the interviews!) pictured with a Platinum dress:

As you can see, the store is dress heaven for brides-to-be on the hunt for that perfect gown:

And, there are headpieces and jewelry items to choose from to really get an idea of how the whole ensemble will come together:

At the store, I spoke with Priscilla of Boston designer Tracy Uomoleale, Vineyard Collection designer, Mark Brower, and Antonio Gual, co-designer (along with Lia McNairy) of Melissa Sweet and Reverie by Melissa Sweet.

I loved having the opportunity to chat with all of these talented designers and, as an editor, greatly appreciate their dedication and skill. Believe me, when people ask me “How can a white dress possibly look any different year after year?” I tell them that they would be very surprised. There's always a new twist on bridal design and a fresh approach so, all you lucky brides, get ready to shop because I promise. with all the dazzling designs we saw this season. you are sure to find your dream dress. Well, have to run. We're “closing an issue” now (more on that some other time) and my in-box is overflowing!

Posted by Diane at 10:55 a.m.

So when our fashion team planned a flower girl photo shoot a few weeks ago, I just had to visit the studio to see these little cuties wearing some of the prettiest flower girl dresses. The little models ranged in age from 4-1/2 to 7 and needless to say, the studio was all a-buzz with these high-spirited, energetic little girls.

Here, Associate Fashion Editor, Alison Rowe, sorts through racks of frilly frocks.

And stylist Drew Felton steams out wrinkles in this two-toned number.

Do's & Don'ts

October 21, 2008

Do's & Don'ts

Guest Blogger: Susan Schneider, Executive Editor

Hi, fans of Diane! Our esteemed editor in chief is attending Bridal Market this week, and she's asked me to be in touch with you. Those are some pretty impressive pumps to step into, but I'm going to give it a whirl. Now bridal market sounds like heaven, doesn't it? Thousands of fabulous white gowns on runways and in showrooms all over the city, the very latest and greatest styles and, well, everyone buzzing around with excitement. But it's hard work-I can tell you that. Diane, along with Dana Wagner, our fashion editor, and Alison Rowe, our associate fashion and beauty editor, get up at the crack of dawn every day to get started, then wend their way from show to show (through Manhattan traffic!) to make sure they don't miss even one tiny frill or furbelow to report back to you. Just wait till you see what they're seeing now....

In the meantime, we've got lots more important bridal business. We're constantly hearing from brides about the things they wish they HADN'T done. You know, the sorts of things you end up doing simply because you're FRANTIC. Our mantra here at Bridal Guide is that weddings should be happy events-how radical is that? So for your health, wealth and happiness, here are some DON'TS that will do you good:

DON'T:

Be a superbride. Of course you can leap over tall buildings and grow your own orchids and bake your own five-tier wedding cake-but don't. Huge projects can end up undone as the clock ticks along, so be realistic. And friends can help with a lot of stuff; have an invitation-stuffing party, for example. Never fear delegating tasks to your loved ones: It makes people feel important to be asked to help out.

Have an open bar. Of course you'd love to make this generous gesture toward your guests, but long after they've forgotten all about it, it will be haunting your wallet. Instead, offer guests wine and perhaps an absolutely fabulous signature drink, like a pretty cranberry martini with an herb garnish, for example.

Stuff your guests. If you're like me, you worry that you'll run out of food or that guests will leave your tables with their stomachs growling. Never fear. Don't serve a five-course sit-down meal-they'll be just fine with three. Skip the groaning dessert table-cake is fine. And for good measure, ask your local baker to make you a simple but elegant confection-it will cost less than if you go to a wedding cake baker.

Bow to wedding envy. Ah, this is so insidious. The green monster reared its ugly head after you attended a friend's wedding. She had an eight-piece band and you plan to have a really fun DJ. She had French champagne, and you're getting a nice sparkling wine from New Zealand. OK, look: Forget about her. Your party will be delightful and festive, and no one at all could care less about the champagne anyway. You might even want to serve a good white wine instead of the sparkling stuff. People usually prefer it to bubbly.

Let ANYONE take over your guest list. Once you have a budget in mind, you can figure out realistically how many guests you can afford to have. Ask both sets of parents for their lists, in order of preference. Then fix them with a steely gaze and warn them that you will, if necessary, be cutting from the bottom. Prepare to ignore their screams.

Forget about your fiance. That poor lonely fellow over there playing video games? Does he look familiar? Make sure to spend quality time with your guy when you actually don't discuss wedding-related issues. View this period of your lives as preparation for being a married couple-set a tone of conviviality and shared responsibilities. Weddings are fun; marriage is forever.

DO (hey, these are easy):

Eat well. Make sure you have healthy meals, not junky snacks. Take baggies of almonds or fresh or dried fruit with you in the car-these are tasty energy foods that fill you up and provide good stuff your body craves in stressful times. Note: diet soda does NOT help you lose weight-drink H2O instead.

Indulge in massage whenever stress is making you, an entirely reasonable woman, start to hyperventilate. Try 20 minutes of reflexology (you don't even have to get undressed) and enjoy the way this specialized massage can unwind your whole body.

Yoga. Here's something about me: I've done yoga for years, and I swear it's the best form of meditation/exercise going. I'm not getting married, but I do yoga anyway, just to deal with everyday stress. Look for a basic hatha yoga class in your neighborhood and try some simple relaxation poses that are practically guaranteed to return to your fundamentally sane self.

Hey, get back to us! We want your dos and don'ts too. Your fellow brides are waiting for solace!

Posted by Susan at 3:55 p.m.

Second Chances

October 14, 2008

Second Chances

A reader e-mailed last week asking me for some advice. She's an excited second-time bride and wanted a few tips on how to include her children and her fiance's in the ceremony (great idea to make everyone in this new extended family feel important) and whether or not she could wear a white or ivory gown (definitely yes, but I told her she can also consider a pretty shade of blue, pink, yellow or peach.) She also wanted to know what the etiquette is on registering for gifts. Well, the etiquette says that second-time brides can register and have bridal showers. Now, considering that it's 11 years since her first wedding I imagine that she has some new friends, co-workers and certainly relatives of her groom's family who will happily give gifts. But what about some of those guests who may have attended her first wedding? I'm curious: Do you think it's OK to expect them to give gifts again at another shower? Have you ever been invited to a bridal shower for a second-time bride and if so, did you resent having to purchase gifts? I'd love to get your feedback because I'm sure there's a lot of different opinions out there.

That said, I should note that this particular bride was very concerned about not offending anyone and didn't want to do anything that smacked of looking too greedy. In fact, whenever I read your e-mails (and I do try to answer all of them, honest!) I find that you are the opposite of the stereotypical 'bridezilla'. You want everything to run smoothly and hope your family and friends have a blast at your wedding. You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and you try to soothe ruffled feathers. So, here's to you for your concerns and consideration and efforts to please the masses (although it's not always possible so don't fret!)

One last note: today we started our planning meetings for our May/June 2009 issue. Over several weeks, I conduct a marathon of meetings with all of the editors (today Travel Editor, Jenna Mahoney, and Senior Associate Editor, Elena Mauer, presented their story lineups. (I'm so excited about their ideas but don't want to reveal too much so more on that later.) Anyway, it's hard to believe that '08 is barely over and we're halfway through 2009 in bridal magazine land. But planning these stories and brainstorming on how to give you the most timely and useful and exciting information is what we love to do so do let me know if there are some topics you'd love to read about in Bridal Guide and we'll get them on the lineup pronto! Until next time... Diane

Posted by Diane at 4:21 p.m.

An Italian Adventure

October 7, 2008

An Italian Adventure

I want to share with you an amazing trip I just took to one of my favorite countries, Italy, as an invited guest of Italian-based bridal gown company Atelier Aimee to help celebrate their 25 years in business. (You can see one of their gowns on page 224 in our November/December 2008 issue, on the newsstands now.)

Like many successful businesses they started small when Dr. Matthias Kissing bought the company and his wife, Lucia Zanotti, began designing bridal gowns. Today, they are a global enterprise with retail operations not only in Italy, but also in Europe, the USA and Asia (their newest store will open soon in Tokyo.)

In Mantova, Italy, some 1 1/2 hours east of Milan and where the first Atelier Aimee boutique opened, I visited their celebratory exhibition, (along with about 300 other guests!) entitled '...in the museum of Love-25 years of Atelier Aimee Montenapoleone brides.'

This is the impressive Castle of Mantua in Mantova, where the exhibition took place on September 15th. In the background is the Rotonda di San Lorenzo:

And here we are making our way inside the castle...

...where 100 gowns, reflecting Atelier Aimee's collections throughout their 25-year history, were on display:

Take a look at these beauties. I love the mix of textures and the touch of color:

And these two styles were beautifully ombred and draped to perfection:

Who doesn't love flowers at a wedding? Here, Lucia Zanotti showcased two of her creations, one bedecked with a garden of roses on a dramatically-pleated back and the other featuring embroidered roses on a corset-style bodice:

For those who love the color purple, these two gowns are sure to impress. The gown on the left has a pretty back floral accent while the other is exquisitely hand-painted on the bodice and skirt:

Here, a chic threesome 'poses' for the crowd (kind of like the haircut!):

These two gowns have a very royal feel: the empire-waist style is a bit Empress Josephine while the 3/4-sleeve lace ballgown is reminiscent of Princess Diana's wedding dress:

These golden-hued beauties were quite impressive and I love the creative touches of gold on each design-from the elegant pleated gown on the left with its beaded waistband to the draped and beaded corset-style gowns in the center and on the right:

Isn't this gown gorgeous? It's elegant and romantic and the crystal beading on the bodice is appropriately dazzling without being 'too much':

Here, subtle beading also defines these empire-waist dresses:

And colorful gemstones decorate an array of gorgeous gowns on a bodice...

...an empire waist...

and even on a veil...

Needless to say, it was a fantastic night and so inspiring to see the creativity, craftsmanship and the attention to detail and love that went into each and every gown.

But, of course, these dresses are the final outcome of what is an incredible design process. Our trip also included a visit to the Atelier Aimee headquarters in Castiglione where approximately 10,000 dresses per year are manufactured.

We learned that it takes two to three months to produce one dress. They are custom-made, many are intricately detailed and everything is hand sewn. (However a simpler dress, with less detailing and labor-intensive work involved, can be manufactured in 24 hours.) About 20 to 22 people work on one dress alone and it may take almost two years to train a new employee to learn some of the intricate work involved in the making of a dress.

There is a great deal of dedication, hard work and passion involved with the making of each gown and I was truly impressed with the merging of modern-day technology and hands-on craftsmanship that goes into each creation. After designer Lucia Zanotti sketches her ideas and creates a collection, her designs are input into a computer program in this design room:

Next, the patterns are printed out on paper-in full size-from this huge machine:

Paper patterns are often draped on mannequins to get a better sense of how the finished product will look:

Even beading is carefully laid out and each beaded design input into a computer:

Fabrics are chosen from a room filled with a gazillion samples in every shade of white and ivory as well as a variety of colors:

And just to make sure that every piece of fabric that's used is in tip-top shape, the fabrics are placed onto this light machine and inspected for imperfections, discolorations, tiny tears, etc. (Talk about finding the 'perfect' dress!):

Once the fabric gets the seal of approval, it's placed over the paper pattern and cut by this machine into a basic design:

But, it's not all about the machines, lest you think this is a Terminator world of bridal design! It's really the seamstresses and designers who deserve kudos for fashioning these patterns into fabulous creations. Here, one employee hand cuts a lace pattern:

And these ladies are hard at work sewing...

Pinning...

Draping...

And steaming and ironing...

It was fascinating to see so many of these talented people hand sewing beads and ruffles and rosettes:

No wonder it takes several months to custom make one dress! The process is efficient but never rushed and each person is a true artisan, ensuring that her contribution is the best it can be. Now, you're probably wondering about price, right? Atelier Aimee's custom-designed, couture gowns start at $3,000 (I actually thought it would be higher after witnessing all the work that goes into the design process) but depending on how much detail and work is involved the price, of course, will be higher.

Finally, the dresses are ready to be bagged and boxed and shipped to eager brides-to-be all over the world:

Not only are dresses designed and manufactured at Atelier Aimee's headquarters, but there is also a beautiful showroom there where local brides can visit and try on gowns:

Now, before I sign off, there are just a few people I'd like to thank for this wonderful opportunity that I've been delighted to share with you. Grazie and congratulations to our gracious hosts, designer Lucia Zanotti and her charming husband, Dr. Matthias Kissing. Isn't Lucia straight from central casting? (Let's see, we had breakfast in Mantova, coffee in Verona, lunch in Sirmione, refreshments in Castiglione and dinner in Milan-all in one day!) And the lovely Claudia Molinari, Atelier's U.S. Sales Manger, pictured on the right, and the charming Marisa, on the left, who works at headquarters in Castiglione. They couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating and fun.

Well, now that you've gone behind the scenes to see how Atelier Aimee's bridal gowns are made, please tell me about yours.
