Last week I attended a presentation held by jewelry designer Scott Kay introducing his new SK Cobalt collection of wedding bands:

What makes this collection unique is that it's made of a new metal called BioBlu™27, which has been engineered to be five times harder than platinum and will not scratch, crack, chip or fracture. Sound too good to be true? That's what I thought, too, until Scott started throwing rings made of different metals (tungsten carbide, gold, palladium and platinum) against a piece of tile flooring and applying pressure to them:

I knew gold was pretty pliable, but what surprised me was how easily the tungsten carbide shattered. The platinum and palladium rings held up pretty well, but even they had a few small chips when struck with a metal object. The BioBlu™27 rings stayed in tact through the various tests.

At the end of the presentation I took a closer look at the various rings in the SK Cobalt collection, and I have to say they were beautiful and very bright and shiny. White Hot Couture

All the buzz is about upcoming designer Jorge Manuel!

Jorge Manuel just showed a breathtaking collection at market. His artistic designs feature rosettes, box pleats, incredible silhouettes and delicate embroidery. His designs are a beautiful marriage of artistry and feminine grace. Jorge grew up in Miami and began his journey into bridal at age 15 when he designed a wedding. By age 16 he became a popular wedding planner within the Hispanic community of Miami (actually opening his own event company!) By age 17 he designed his first wedding gown.

Recently I met the girls from Sara Gabriel Veiling & Headpieces, and I must say they are a veil company you must check out! The veils and headpieces are each so original and fashion forward. Vintage Glamour

As you know, I was at Bridal Market in Chicago last week. While walking through the booths I saw a marvelous display. The ladies at Maritza's Bridal Veil combined a gorgeous black feather headpiece with a diamante flower to create a gorgeous effect. When I saw this chic look I had to take a picture to share with you. For all you girls that want to emulate the appeal of the 1920's flapper, this look is a must. Fan-tastic Wrap!

Recently, while I made a trip to the Chicago Bridal Market I met the lovely Britt Rynearson. She makes pleated silk shawls, which are truly original works of art. Each shawl is hand pleated using the century old methods of Arashi Shibori, a technique originating from Japan. I think these wraps with their pleats and origami appeal add the perfect modern aesthetic to any wedding look. She also makes them in different colors. perfect for the bridesmaids! Cinderella Never Had It So Good...

Finding the perfect white shoes that combine the right mix of fashiony cute, feminine, sweet and something you will cherish for a long time can be difficult. Kickin' It Old School

Lately I've been obsessed with all things vintage. I could blame it on the wonderful influence of my good friend at Maven Vintage (check out her site. some cool things for your home at a great price) or my recent visit to the Brooklyn Flea market where there was a mirror, ceiling tiles and amethyst doorknobs that I wanted so badly. But let's face it; this vintage stuff is just plain cool.

So it's no surprise that I've been drawn to vintage-inspired wedding dresses. (Although I'm a single gal with no plans to marry soon, it's hard not to think about my own wedding dress when I'm working on a bridal site.) I don't remember how I stumbled upon them, but I absolutely love the wedding dresses by Stephanie James Couture. I've never been up close and personal with one of her creations, but based on the pics, I know I'd absolutely love them in person.

I'm not big into suits, but if I were to get married Carrie Bradshaw style, this is the one I'd totally pick:

I love the rouching detail on the skirt, and the collar on the jacket is too cute.

The tea-length dresses are my personal faves, so I'd probably choose the Vivian for eloping in Vegas or the Mrs. Kennedy for an afternoon Napa wedding:

Now, if we're talking about a more formal event, I'm going with one of her full-length creations. like the Evelynn. It reminds me of that old Hollywood glamour, which is perfect for a movie buff like me.

Unfortunately, every bride who throws (or attends) a summer wedding runs the risk of creased eye shadow or mascara running down her face. How embarrassing!

Before the official start of summer, the BG fashion and beauty team was fortunate enough to experience a trip to Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa in Fort Meyers, Florida. With scenic views and the ocean at our footsteps, we just couldn't pass up this amazing opportunity to shoot some fashion stories for our upcoming issues. While the location was absolutely perfect, strategic planning and long hours of preparation on our part were necessary to make the fashion shoots a total success. Here's a behind-the-scenes peek at our weekend work getaway…

Best of Skintentions

Thankfully, signs of spring seem to be popping up everywhere. Even though winter is still hanging on for dear life, we're starting to see longer days and (sometimes) slightly warmer weather. If you're anything like me, you know that also means the old beauty routine needs a few tweaks. Buh-bye heavy-duty facial moisturizer! Dry Shampoo?

Hi Ladies!

So in the past few weeks with the closing of the issue, I have (unfortunately) had a few of those mornings where I just didn t have time to wash my hair before work. After a few days of missing my shampoo, I had to seek out help. It was in this distressed state of mind that I found the miracle of the dry shampoo. The first product I tried was ok, but as a dark-haired lady, the white powder gave the slight hint of premature graying. not so fab! New Life

I'm Steph, the newest addition to the fashion and beauty team here at Bridal Guide. I've been downright obsessed with beauty products for pretty much my entire life. In fact, some of my fondest childhood memories involve rooting through my mom's makeup drawer. I couldn't tell you who my first grade school crush was, but I can distinctly recall the first time I used a roller ball lip gloss (it was bubblegum-flavored and it was amazing). Needless to say, this internship is a dream come true for me! I'm looking forward to trying out the latest and greatest products and letting you in on our beauty discoveries. What can I say? I'm willing to take one for the team!

I'm always on the hunt for the next big thing in hair care. I've struggled all my life to find something that really works. ever since my first hair cut when I burst into tears. From this experience, I remain considerably traumatized and continue to let my hair grow out of control (not sure if I blame that torturous incident or the overwhelming influence the blonde locks of Barbie dolls had on me as a kid).

While I'm more than happy to admit my long hair is a serious security blanket, the combination of my cheapness and laziness has caused me to slack off a bit in the upkeep department. tranlsation: my hair is completely lifeless. Nailing It

If you're anything like me, you look forward to treating yourself to a mani/pedi combo every week. I mean it's the perfect thing to do after Sunday brunch with the girls and before some retail therapy. But, with the economy on the fritz, I've had to reign in the spending and set up shop to paint my own nails. Unfortunately, I'm not the most artistically-gifted person (especially when painting my left hand!), but I've come across these fabulous new Nail Art Pens from Sally Hansen that make it super easy to sport professional looking nails!

Recessionistas Rejoice!

Hey all you gorgeous brides-to-be. welcome to the new year! I hope everyone enjoyed a bounty of tree-trimming, hall-decking and egg-nogging over the holidays, and that you all rang in '09 by smooching your significant other silly under the mistletoe at midnight …. Now, back to business. Raise your hands if you read the New York Times (full disclosure: I pretty much only read the “women's sport pages,” aka, the Style Section, aka the Who's Who Guide to Who-Got-Hitched, although Resolution #483 is to read other sections, as well). Well, in case you didn't see the article, there was a round up of the best buzz words of 2008, and one of the favorites was “frugalista,” meaning one who is frugal, but fashionable. On a Mission

I'm fascinated by all things pretty and sparkly, but what really catches my attention is when those pretty, sparkly things help contribute to a good cause. Last year I was on a mission for the perfect birthday present for one of my best friends when I came across the Obligato Necklace by Diana Warner:

Everyone wants a piece of Vera Wang. Her delicately constructed gowns, with their playful sashes, put sophistication on the bridal gown map in the early 1990s. But since not everyone can afford the luxury designer, luckily-at least in New York City-there are sample sales! (For everyone who doesn't live here: Be jealous.) This Saturday's (Dec. 13) sale at the New Yorker Hotel promises a ton of overstock and 35 to 75 percent off retail prices on both gowns and bridesmaid dresses. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the hotel, which is on 481 Eighth Ave., at 34th St. Happy bargain hunting!

Lucky Stars

I already knew that Jane Wang was an amazing designer...that's why we featured her in the Jan/Feb issue (out now). But she gleaned even more respect from me after I saw her in a news clip on CBS last night.

Allegedly, the owner of a bridal boutique in Livingston, New Jersey, has been taking dress orders and deposits from unknowing b-to-be's, but not delivering the dress. Frantic, brides have been calling the owner and have even sent letters from their lawyers, but with their weddings only weeks away, they were still out a dress-and the money.

One bride, desperate for a resolution, contacted the designer directly. Lucky for her, it was Jane Wang. Apparently, the dress had been ready for weeks but without receiving payment from the shop, Wang held onto the dress. The bride was thrilled she'd still be able to wear the gown of her dreams. Wang, hand-sewing the dresses by herself, has aided up to six brides that were also cheated by the same retailer. Lazaro, another well-known designer, has promised to finish a different bride's gown so it'll be ready for her New Year's nuptials. I can't imagine the roller coaster ride these women have endured.

To safeguard your dress and dinero (a 50 % deposit is standard), BG suggests that you draw up a specific contract and pay with a credit card. This way, if something goes wrong, many credit card companies won't hold you financially responsible.

The Hunt for My Gown

Me again! I'm back to talk about an issue that's been slowly but surely taking over my every thought. which wedding dress to choose. Like most of you, I started dreaming about the perfect dress from pretty much the second we were engaged (it was actually the second thing I thought about. first thing was the guest list, which Jer and I wrote together while laying on the beach in Hawaii, the morning after he proposed. Excited much? We couldn't wait.)

But anyway. back to the point. I wasn't one of those girls who started planning their wedding back in 3rd grade. In fact, I didn't give the details much thought until it became obvious that, yes, we were going to get married and that, therefore, I needed to start figuring this stuff out. So I started by doing what most NYC-based brides do: I booked an appointment at Kleinfeld's. For those who don't know, Kleinfeld's is the bridal mecca of Manhattan. They carry a million designers and also have their own exclusive lines, so it's a great place to start the search for the dress. (You may also know it from the show 'Say yes to the dress,' which was filming the day I went in. Mercifully, I was not on air.)

Over the course of my 1 1/2 hour appointment, I tried on about 10 dresses. The styles were all over the place, from slinky sheaths to princessy ball gowns and everything in between. It was overwhelming to say the least. And since they don't let you take pictures (why, I do not know!!) it was hard to remember each dress at all, much less how I liked it and how I looked in it.

I will say that when I left there, I had discovered a few things: 1) That, although I love the look of loose and flowy dresses, they don't flatter me, 2) I like ball gown styles much more than I expected to, and 3) that trumpet styles (which flare out just under your bottom) give my bum a rather flattering lift! But I needed to keep looking, so off I went to Bergdorf Goodman with my MOH. They have amazing customer service (and let you take pictures!) and I found two more amazing options there. As of now my favorite styles are 'Fern' by Melissa Sweet, 'Shakura' by Oscar de la Renta, and an unnamed but stunning cap-sleeve, open-back style from Jenny Packham. I didn't get to take pics of myself in Fern, since I tried that on at Kleinfeld's, but it was so beautiful and fits the theme of my wedding (20's glam) perfectly. Check it out:

At Bergdorf, I could take photos of the Oscar de la Renta and Jenny Packham gowns (Jeremy, if you are reading this, stop now!!!) One is almost double my target budget while the other comes in well below. I'm not saying which is which, so I'm hoping you guys will tell me which dress is your favorite:

Totally different from each other, I know. But both so stunning!! If the prices were lower I'd consider doing one for the ceremony and another for the reception, but let's face it. I'm not made of money. So I have to choose. The question is...which one?? Which do you guys like?

Dressing the Bridesmaids

Hey all! I'm Liz. I'm marrying the greatest guy next September (9-5-09!) and am slowly wading deeper into the whole planning process. I don't work at Bridal Guide anymore, but I was a Home editor there for 3 years. BG was my very first job out of college, and I interned there during my senior year of school. So I have a lot of history with Bridal Guide, but there's more-my fiance works at Bridal Guide, too! He's the IT director-y'know, the computer guy. Not only that, but his family publishes the magazine. Crazy, right? We met when we both worked there. When he agreed to come with me to a family wedding after my then-boyfriend refused, I knew he was someone special. (I was right-as I write this he's making dinner AND setting the table!)

So it goes without saying that Bridal Guide has and will continue to play a big role in my life. That's why when my good friend Dana (aka, BG Fashion and Beauty editor) asked me to do some guest blogging, I happily obliged. As a former BG-er engaged to a current BG-er, and of course, as a bride-to-be, who better to talk about all the wedding-related questions and concerns that arise when planning your dream day?

Even though my wedding is still 11 months away, I started thinking about dresses pretty much right away. Lately I've been looking everywhere for the perfect bridesmaid dresses. It's a tall order-the winner has to fit the mood of the wedding (20's-inspired chic!) and fit my bridesmaids' bodies AND their budgets. Not so simple. But all my searching is starting to pay off-I think I've found a few styles that just might work. Right now I'm loving this gorgeous dress from Priscilla of Boston:

I love the color the model is wearing, but my palette will be purples and silver, so I was so excited to see that it also comes in a really pretty deep plum shade. And, since my bridesmaids all have different body shapes, I'm thrilled that this dress looks like it would flatter them all. Plus, the material is a forgiving silk, as opposed to that dreaded satin or taffeta that clings to every unwanted curve. On a side note, why are so many bridesmaids dresses made of fabrics that so few women look good in? Makes no sense. Anyway, I'm not sure how much this dress costs but Priscilla dresses are usually pretty reasonable, so I'm crossing my fingers that this is too. I'm hoping for under $200, $250 tops.What I'm mostly loving is the jeweled brooch, which fits right into the elegant, vintage-y vibe I'm trying/hoping to create for the big day.

I also adore this style from Jenny Yoo (who, I just learned, is a college friend of another former BG-er! Small world.) I think this dress might be a little pricier than what I'm looking for, but I don't know for sure. And besides-how pretty is it?! It also probably helps that the dress is shown in the perfect purple. I think the girls will love it too, because it shows off the asset most girls (or my friends, at least!) are comfortable with-their boobs. So that's a plus. And the empire cut is super flattering. Another good option to keep in mind.

So the good news is that I found bridesmaid dresses I love! I still have to get the girls together to try them on and see if they're the right pick, but both styles are flattering, the materials are easy to wear, and the cuts should suit most body types. I'm thinking if I find a dress that my least body-confident bridesmaid likes and feels good in, the other girls will look and feel good in it too. I'll keep you all posted on the reaction of my bridesmaids-and if I find more options I love, you'll be the first to hear about those too!

P.S. These are some of my closest friends in the dresses they wore to another friend's wedding this past June. Aren't they so pretty? (The girls and the dresses!) Love the lace detail, too. Anyhoo, just wanted to share. More soon.

Chicago Deep Dish

Hola ladies.... I can't believe it, but it's that time of year again: wedding season. Maybe not so much for brides themselves, but this is the crazy month-long period when all the designers show off their new spring collections to editors, buyers and the few randoms who just seem to love those frothy concoctions known as wedding gowns.

I am just back from five days in the Windy City, where I wasn't sightseeing or partaking in the Wired NextFest in Millennium Park, but instead was scoping out over 125 different new wedding gown collections. (There were actually waaay more than that, but there is only so much one person can do, even in back-to-back 10-hour days... Phew!)

Okay, so this isn't exactly a sneak peek, it's the cover of the show planner that lists all the exhibitors, the show floor layout and more. But trust me when I say the latest and greatest from these designers is pretty fantastic ....

Just FYI, Alison and I are going to be on the DL for the next few weeks, gearing up for a fun flower girl shoot, preparing for eight more days of market here in NYC and then busting out of town immediately afterwards for a week-long location shoot up in Vermont-the craziness never seems to end! But be sure to look out for the March/April issue, which will showcase tons of the new styles! Til then,

Holiday Blues

There are good ways to start your morning, and there are not so good ways to start your morning. Having a sinfully rich, chocolate-laced breakfast with your beauty editor brethren, sitting at a table laden with fabulous brand-new beauty product not yet available to anyone else, is, IMHO, one of the more fantastic ways. And that's exactly how I started my first day of October (an auspicious start to the month!) ...

Going to beauty events is a big part of my job-it's how I stay on top of what's new and noteworthy in an ever-expanding category, and it gives me a chance to hob nob with my fellow beauty peeps. And, events are fun. When I got this invite to a breakfast hosted by the founders of Too Faced Cosmetics and the lovely ladies at Blue Sky PR, I knew it was not to be missed:

I mean, how many invites does one get after the age of 7 that sport Smurfette, for crying out loud?

A car picked me up at my apartment and dropped me at Max Brenner, the chocolate shop/restaurant/celebrity hangout owned by celebrity chocolatier Max Brenner himself. There's so much chocolate in the place, Willy Wonka would be jealous. Seriously.

This is the special breakfast menu-everything (and I mean everything) had a chocolately element with a Smurfette spin. Good thing I'm cuckoo for cocoa! And who doesn't love Smurfette? She is the ultimate girly-girl and all the boys wanted to woo her-even Gargamel!

Talk about delicious-looking centerpieces! These could be a cute idea for brides having an after party (or a less traditional reception, even!)

Okay, so my pictures are really bad, but apparently a blackberry's main function is not photography. Anywho. More Smurfette wonderfulness-and the new, limited-edition products Too Faced is launching on December 26th! More info below, but mark your calendars... On a side note, the Smurfs are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year (!!!), so the timing of this launch couldn't be more perfect.

The devilishly handsome blond guy on the right is Jerrod Blandino, one of the co-founders of Too Faced. He's getting married on November 1st in la-la-land, and celebrity fave Mindy Weiss is his wedding planner, aka new best friend. You should see the skating rink he's sporting on his left hand-it is without doubt the most sparkliest sparkler I have ever seen. Ever. And I work at a bridal magazine-I see a lot of them.

This pretty box was in the press bag I took home with me after the event-along with a decadent chocolate cookie!

And this is what was inside! All the fun, new collections, plus a surprise gift...

Here's a closer-up of the Smurfette Collection-all of it is amazing, but my fave is the Mood Swing lip gloss: it goes on a sparkly blue and poof! A nanosecond later, it morphs into your uniquely and individually perfectly gorge shade of Smurfberry Pink. I actually tried it while I was at the event and as soon as I walked into the office, like 17 people immediately said they loved my lipstick (even tho it was gloss. Whatevs...)

How cute is this? It's an illuminating powder with Smurfette's mug. And no, it doesn't turn you blue, it turns you a better shade of you.

And the adorable, retro-ish T-shirt nestled at the bottom of the box... it's so soft and pre-worn, it feels like I've had it since I actually had smurfs....

Too Faced's slogan ... seems like something Smurfette would agree with, right?!

Don't forget to look for the collection right after Christmas-it's a limited run, so you better be quick if you want to snap up the goodness...

Cover Me

Okay, so you're standing at the newsstand, trying to figure which magazine to buy-if you're like moi, you get the one with the most interesting cover, right? Maybe it's the prettiest girl (in your opinion) that catches your eye, or maybe there are stories that sound intriguing. Or maybe you just really like the colors they used. Whatever. It's the cover that grabs you and makes you buy the book, which is why cover shoots are soooooo important. (Did you see this month's, speaking of? It really is one of my all-time favorites.)

So yesterday, the gowns that I want to consider for the next issue arrived in a big ol' box that must have weighed a million pounds. Alison and I immediately started going through it, pulling the gowns out one by one, but sometimes it's hard to picture what they'll look like on a person as opposed to hanging there all rumply from being shipped half-way across the country. Luckily, we have our very own engaged Jenna in the office! And as it happens, she hasn't yet found the dress of her dreams, so ....

Our new intern, Kelly, helps Jenna get zipped into a fabulously slinky crystal number. The dresses hanging on the door to my office are also up for consideration... The boa, probably not.

Ta-dah! Go, Jenna, for fitting into a sample size, you sexy thang....

The pink brassiere certainly adds a certain je ne sais quoi....

New on the Scene

Hey, I'm Kelly, the new intern for the fashion and beauty team! After a year at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, I will be starting in January at American University. With my fashion background and my borderline obsession with weddings, it's an understatement to say I'm LOVING this experience. Let's just say the wedding industry isn't a new phenomena to me-my own big day has been planned since before I knew my ABCs; as an avid bridal magazine reader (and no, I'm not engaged), it's like a dream come true to see the inner workings behind the glossy pages I read every month! And the icing on the cake, my own wedding plans are only getting bigger and better! Though I'll have to wait a few years for that...

A New Way to Brush

I feel it's my duty to tell you about a fab new toothbrush that hits shelves this month. It's the Oral B Pulsonic, and is designed by the fabulous, famous Jonathon Adler-so you know it looks pretty as well as giving your teeth the boot camp of brushings.

I swear, after I use it I feel as though I have just left the dentist's chair. I am totally sold, so much so, I got one for my hubby. Yeah, yeah, I hear you, we'll never do the matching sweaters and warm-up suits, but I am going to throw this out: The couple that brushes together, stays together. Just a thought!

The Clothes Make the Man

Ok, ladies, I know. I know, I know, I know. At the end of the day, it's aaaaaall about the girl in the white dress. Given. But come on: Why not give the love of your life a moment in the spotlight, too. at least sartorially speaking. After all, it is (kind of) also his day, right? At the very least, you can make sure his threads are up to par with yours. which is where I come in.

If you saw Alison's last post, you know that I was recently in Las Vegas for the International Formalwear Alliance's annual convention. (IFA is fancy-speak for the group of folks who manufacture men's formalwear, aka tuxes and all their trimmings.) They hold it every August and choose a different locale every year; I must say, even though my experience was so far removed from even remotely resembling What Happens in Vegas (where's a sauced Ashton Kutcher when you need him?), it was one of the most fun conferences I've been to. Heat index of a zillion and three degrees aside, what's not to love about Sin City? But more about that later.

Now, admittedly, tuxedos are not nearly as swoon-worthy as wedding gowns, but few things are. The great thing about the IFA is that it showcases all the newest trends, the hottest colors and cutting-edge fashions for him that will be coming down the pike in the next few months, and really, who doesn't love having the inside scoop. no matter what it's about?

So, without further ado (drum-roll, please) …. Here it is:

The Trend: Lapel-lover
The tuxedo, for the most part, hasn't really changed since its debut in 1886 by Griswold Lorillard, the son of a wealthy tobacco magnate. (Okay, brace yourself for a little history lesson here, girls.) The Lorillard family estate was located just north of NYC in a posh residential colony called “Tuxedo Park”, so-named for the phonetics of the original Algonquin term for the area. At the time, custom dictated that men wear a long tail coat and white tie to formal affairs; according to lore, Griswold's father, Pierre Lorillard IV, commissioned a black “tailless” jacket (inspired by a design he saw worn by the Prince of Wales, arguably the era's most fashion-forward dude), to wear to the exclusive Tuxedo Club's first annual Autumn Ball.

Long story short: Pierre chickened out at the last minute, his rebellious but popular son (think Gossip Girl's bad boy hearth-throb Chuck Bass) wore it instead, and it wasn't long before the “tuxedo” was considered the only attire of choice for gentlemen in the elite Dress Circle of Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera. Class dismissed. But seriously: if you look at pictures of tuxedos through the ages, you'll notice it's only been very slightly altered; one of the ways designers today are making the silhouette more modern is to change up the lapels a bit….

And here's a Joseph Abboud Black Tie tuxedo with the satin inside the lapel (instead of the outside). “It's supposed to be reminiscent of the silk scarves men used to wear back in the days of top hats and overcoats,” is how it was explained to me. Makes sense, considering the history….

This is one of the newest jackets from FWI Jean Yves Formalwear. notice the thinner-than-usual lapels? Apparently, this is going to be one of the hottest new looks. It's kinda a no-brainer, considering that skinny (or at least, skinnier) ties have been popular for a while now. (The handsome gent is Doug Black, one of the dudes behind BlackGold, a company that makes some of my favorite accessories. They actually won an award for the Best New Accessory this year!) And I'm kinda digging the all-black ensemble. very Jamie Foxx, no?

Jean Yves also had a very cool-looking white tux with black piping, which is very gangsta' fabulous.

The Trend: Ride ‘em Cowboy!

It seems like jeans are considered appropriate garb for almost any event or dress code these days. and now it's officially okay to wear denim to your wedding. The designers at Joseph Abboud Black Tie came up with this stretch denim tux for Joe, their more fashion-forward line; it's actually pretty subtle and if you (and your groom-to-be) are more casual at heart, it could be the perfect marriage between him wearing a tux and letting him wear his favorite 501s. Just saying….

The trend: Mix and Match
With all the destination weddings taking the industry by storm, it's no wonder the folks in the tuxedo biz are coming up with new ways to appeal to this new customer: a traditional black tux feels out of place in the tropics, but the groom's garb should still reflect the formality of the occasion. Right?

After Six's “Catalina Collection” is kind of like Garanimals for the formal set. remember those?!?! Basically, every jacket goes with every pant: you simply choose the color combo that best suits your taste. You can't miss, promise!

After Six also had some kick-butt linen-textured suits that are perfect for destination weddings (check out our Jan/Feb issue, which we just shot in St. John, for more examples. it's on-stand mid-November!)

The Trend: Shades of Gray (and otherwise!)
A bunch of vendors were showing new colorways this season. One of my faves? Gray. For some reason, gray tuxes remind me of the woolen blazers worn with short pants by British schoolboys… but the grown up, chic version.

See what I mean? This one is from the guys at FLOW Formalwear.

Here's another one by FLOW. I especially like the striated fabric, which gives it some interesting, textural appeal.

And one by After Six. It looks nice with the pink accessories, right?

Brown was another big color. it was big last year, and it's still running strong this season. The folks at Luxe MicroFiber had a number of great looking brown tuxes, some of them striped, some with tone-on-tone stripes and all of them fabulous. And FYI, their shirts are to-die for. super soft, and really comfortable (or so I've heard).

The Trend: Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize!
Accessories this season are all about color. if you can dream it, chances are they make some accessories in it:

A Quickie Update

August has been a pretty hectic month! We shot our entire Jan/Feb 09 issue in St. John in the USVI. what a beautiful island; perfect for destination weddings and honeymoons, wink, wink!! That will be on stands in November so keep an eye out for it. After we got back, Dana went to Vegas for the International Formalwear Association show (that's where she finds out what's hot and happening in the tuxedo world.) And I was in the Florida Keys checking out some fabulous places to tie the knot. or honeymoon. for a story in an upcoming issue. Now Fashion Week is about to kick off...never a dull moment! Stay tuned for some behind-the-scenes snaps....

Wax On, Wax Off

Seminars are soooo yesterday-which is one of the reasons I'm really excited about an upcoming webinar (yes, you heard right) that is sure to be the total how-to of how-to's on one of the most popular forms of hair removal: waxing. Cindy Barshop, hair removal maven and owner of the fabulous Completely Bare spas in New York and Florida, is going to teach us how to sort out all those hairy areas, including the bikini line! I've never tried tackling that myself; I figured the gymnastics that must be involved in giving yourself a Brazilian would be far too complicated for me-in fact, the words 'naked Twister' come to mind-but apparently there is an easy way, and Cindy and her team of experts are going to tell us all about it! Hi! I'm Jennifer and I'm going to be a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I'm majoring in advertising. Ever since I was really little, I have had an ongoing obsession with fashion, and interning at Bridal Guide with Dana and Alison has allowed me to really explore what its like to work in the fashion and beauty industry - and I LOVE it! My Favorite Hair Products

Hi there! It's Aimee from the Welcome Home blog. I know how important it is to have great hair on any day, especially your wedding day, so I thought I'd come over and share some of my favorite products with you.

Monica said to me the other day, 'Hey, wow! Did you get your hair done???" My reply: 'No. I just combed it.' Being a bride-to-be is a lot like being a new mom. You have 1001 things to do and an hour less than you need to do it. It just so happened this particular morning, Molly took an unforeseen siesta and gave me enough time to shower and blow my hair out. Here are the products that saved the day and that I love right now:

Pantene Pro-V Treatment Hydrating Comb-in treatment: A quarter-sized dab of this after I towel dry and comb my hair out leaves my strands manageable and ready-to-style.

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Straight Answer Straightening Spray: After letting my hair air-dry (usually while I get dressed, put on my face, feed Jack and search for the other shoe I need that day) for about 20 minutes, I spray this on my locks for a little extra smoothness and control. It battles the frizz without weighing down strands.

A plastic wide-tooth comb: This is my secret weapon. Every girl knows it's a no-no to brush hair when it's wet. So of course, that's its first use. But the trick is to use it at the very end as you blowout each section of your hair. This was a little inside info that my good friend Martha from Albert's in NYC taught me. Don't know why but it works every time.

Treat Your Tresses

Hi everyone! This is Aimée from the 'Welcome Home' blog. My recent hair experience was so great, Dana and Alison wanted me to share it with all you brides-to-be.

Every woman knows that a fab cut and color is well worth eating top ramen for a week to pay for it. Being from California, I'm used to spending top dollar to doll myself up. In my previous ZIP code that translated to about $150–$200. As a hip, in-the-know kind of gal (or so I thought), I was taken aback by the sticker prices in NY to treat my tresses. I was going to a salon and paying upwards of $300–$400! Post-Molly, that's just not my world anymore. Desperate for a cut and color last weekend, I walked into Albert's, a salon right in my Gramercy ‘hood and got both for $118. with a perfectly coiffed blowout!

This salon has been around for 30+ years. And yes, there is an Albert. We met. A gem of a woman named Martha expertly calmed my curls and transformed my locks from blah to beautiful. This isn't, however, for the faint of heart. she's old school! She actually put a cap on my head (yes, a cap!), pulled the hair out and highlighted it. I'm a child of 3–4 hour foil processes so I'll admit, I was skeptical. But the end result was exactly the same and took half the time. To quote Martha, “If I spend hours and hours coloring your hair, I have to charge you for it.” Finally, someone who understands the worth of a dollar and my time. This is a neighborhood joint at its best. charming, eclectic and absolutely refreshing in a city filled with so much anonymity. Expect to be entertained by all the characters wandering in and out. This whole experience got me to thinking: In this busy, fast-paced, fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants kind of world (especially for a bride-to-be), have we forgotten about the treasures of generations past? I'm not sure but I know that I owe my Grams a long chat!

Oh So Handy

So right now I am love, love, loving this hand cream. I have incorporated it into my daily routine, and I feel as though it has taken a few years off my slightly-more-wrinkled-than-I-would-like hands. I still desperately need a manicure, so I haven't quite attained hand model status yet, but at least I'm heading in the right direction! Oh, and it's got SPF built in, so I'm fighting harmful rays without even thinking about it.

Factor This

Now that I'm on the D.I.Y. beautifying bandwagon, I asked myself, what should I improve next? Lusciously thick hair, check. Radiant skin, check. Oh, I know...I need some spectacular lashes to match. Ladies, you know what I'm talking about. Those lashes you've always dreamed of-the long, thick, skim-the-top of your eyelid lashes. After some side-by-side comparison shopping, I decided to go with the cream of the crop, and have been liberally applying MD Lash Factor to the base of my eyelashes for the past month.

What makes this product so fabulous is that not only has it lengthened my lashes, but it's also encouraged new growth too. Bye-bye sparse stubby lashes, hello border-line falsies!

OK, I know what you're thinking. Do I really want to put something so close to my eye just for aesthetic gain? The answer is, YES! With the much anticipated, warm-weather nights we've had, I, along with the rest of my girlfriends have serious Spring Fever. New restaurants, fabulous open-air bars, and the hippest nightclubs are great excuses to get all dolled up for a night on the town. Tea Time

You know those days when you wake up looking and feeling like a 15-foot big-rig steamrolled over you in the middle of the night? Those days where you can literally see the effects of the fries and cocktails you had the night before (totally worth it though!), stress and lack of sleep written all over your face. After suffering a steady pattern of 'those days' and growing tired of unsuccessfully masking my under-eye bags with the thickest coat of concealer imaginable, I decided that the only remedy to this dire situation was the most indulgent and relaxing massage I could find.

So, like any other self-respecting beauty addict would do, I booked an emergency appointment at The White Tea Spa for a 'MarTEAni on the Rocks.' No, not the drink, but a pampering hot stone massage that melted all my tension away. Feeling like I had to share this heavenly service with someone else, I brought my sister-in-law for backup and company. At first she had reservations, thinking nothing would make her forget about her swollen feet and morning sickness. But in the end, she raved about her customized 'BabyTEA' maternity massage and wished that it would never end!

It wasn't just the massages that we enjoyed, but really the whole White Tea Spa experience. This little oasis in the city was the perfect solution and everything we could have asked for, from the service to the staff, to the relaxing decor. Give Bees A Chance!

As catchy as John Mayer's hit song, 'Waiting on the World to Change' is, I, as a member of Generation Y, feel compelled to do the opposite and actively take part in making a difference. Luckily for me, a beauty company shares the same perspective.

SwitchFlops

I'm the kind of person that likes-well, needs-to travel light. I'll freely admit I'm prone to luggage rage and personally limit myself to one bag. You would think given my aversion to toting a suitcase I would be the first person to offload as much as I can when I check in, but I don't want to let my bag out of my sight-it's not that I'm a pessimist but standing in line at the lost & found after a long flight isn't my idea of fun!

However, I do like to be prepared for any situation (wardrobe-wise), so I'm constantly dealing with the dilemma of squeezing as much of my wardrobe in to my carry-on as possible. Through trial and error, I have come to realize it's helpful to get organized by laying out a couple of mix-and-match outfits on my bed before packing, this way I can limit the amount of clothes I take rather than just stuffing random things-that I don't wear-in a bag. I have the most trouble paring down shoes though. Obviously different outfits call for different pairs and they can take up quite a bit of space.

So imagine my delight when I heard about SwitchFlops: Outwardly a basic flip flop, but peel off the strap-adhered with Velcro-and you can replace it with another one with an entirely different design (there are over 100 designs to choose from). As the extra straps are completely flat, I can take lots as they take up hardly any space in my case!! See how it works here.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

So, here's the 411 on my hair. After taking the Perfectil skin, hair and nail vitamins for about a month, I decided to really put them to the test. My new experiment works like this. First cut four inches off the length. Step two is to take the vitamins religiously. Next, I take daily notes on shine, bounciness, and length and the final step is to paint the town red with super sexy, voluminous hair! Sounds like a winning plan, huh? So far, after completing step one, and practicing step two daily, I've come to notice that my hair really is shinier and healthier. Only time will tell if it will actually grow faster, but I'm already psyched on how swingy and full it looks. Oh, and since starting the master plan, I've received so many compliments! It really is true that when you're having a good hair day, everything else seems to go better too!

Major Relief

So, I love, love, love interning here at Bridal Guide! What's not to like? Fashion, beauty products, and glamorous photo shoots are always a great time. Ok, maybe it's not always as fascinating as it seems. Along with the fun stuff, I do on occasion; have to file away those never-ending piles of press releases that accompany all the products that flood our office. All fine and dandy, until my hands are bleeding uncontrollably from the countless paper cuts that threaten to merge into one giant gash! That's why I was ecstatic when a bag full of Nexcare bandages came in...I think it was meant to be! Striving For 'Perfectil'

If I can't have Giselle Bundchen's body, then can I at least have her hair? That long, luscious, shiny hair that just screams SEXY! Well, enough sitting around and jealously waiting for nothing to happen...I'm on a mission to get it! I've decided to try Perfectil, a once daily dietary supplement from Vitabiotics that's formulated from over 20 micronutrients that work synergistically to nourish hair, skin and nails. I don't really know what that means, but I'm hoping it's code for, hair like Giselle and skin like Cate Blanchett. I'm on my second week of taking them, and I could totally be making it up, but I think my hair is a little bit longer and definitely shinier. One step at a time I guess. Introducing...

I'm Maureen, the third wheel of the fashion and beauty team, and like Dana, I've loved beauty products ever since I was a little girl applying my Hello Kitty lip gloss (border-line obsessive really). I spent eight years as a professional ballerina, and like Alison, I've had the opportunity to test hundreds of cosmetics and creams, while learning about the importance of flattering your figure (umm, wearing tights and leotards for most of my adult life, need I say more?). Barely There

I just got back from the Completely Bare salon in NYC where I had my first ever laser hair removal session. What with summer approaching, I decided to get my underarms done. I wasn't sure quite what to expect but the technician, Nicole, walked me through the process and answered all of my questions, the main one being 'Will it hurt?'. apparently that's not so uncommon. and the answer is no, well, maybe a teensy bit. There was some discomfort, but I found it much less painful than waxing.

The feeling is hard to describe. The gel they put on first is a little cold. no big deal there. and then when the treatment actually starts it almost feels like extremely localized pins and needles. It's not a constant sensation, just when the laser 'fires' which lasts for about a nanosecond. (She 'fired' it maybe about 20 times per side.) And the treatment was really quick. In fact there's a TV in the ceiling that you can watch as you lay on the bed during your treatment, and the movie There's Something About Mary was playing (bear with me here, I am going somewhere), I got up to the bit where Ben Stiller is picking Cameron Diaz up for the prom, goes to the bathroom and gets his you-know-what caught in his zipper; that's as long as the whole thing took. what is that, like seven minutes or something? And that was it.

Apparently this one session should get rid of up to 20% of the hair, and they recommend about 6 sessions for the best results. In the meantime I can shave as normal, I just can't wax or go in the sun. I'm completely hooked and going back for my second treatment in four weeks. I can't believe that I will never have to think about hairy underarms again!

Sex and the City

Like I ever needed another reason to buy fab undies, Cosabella and HBO just gave me one. They channeled the personas from the Sex and the City girls and came up with a really fun lingerie line. Of course I want the whole collection-even though I'm really a Charlotte, I am completely in love with Samantha's sexy ensemble. (Isn't there a little bit of each of the girls in all of us?) The hard part will be deciding just who I want to be at the movie premier in May. Well, that and working out 24/7 to try and look even a little bit as fabulous as this in them! Available at department stores and the HBO store at the end of April '08.

Shoe Frenzy

So I have to spread the word about this fantastic new-ish shoe designer because I'm completely obsessed. Her name is Shannon Britt and along with her twin sister Shelby, they are Shannon Britt Shoes. You have to check out the website, shannonbrittshoes.com, as they might just create some of the most beautiful-and comfortable-shoes on the planet. All the shoes are handmade in Italy, and the amazing attention to detail-things like chiffon or lace overlays and flowers made out of feathers-make them completely unique. If you still aren't sold, you can ask Molly Simms, Eva Longoria or Eva Mendez as they've all been spotted in them. Here's a sneak peak at some of their styles...

Something for Him

My hubby isn't really a cologne-wearing kind of guy. He finds them cloying and avoids them as much as possible. I try to slip in the odd scented soap where I can, but it never really flies. So imagine my surprise when he expressed his love for the Cordovan Body Wash from Banana Republic. They call it a 'seductive blend of ebony spices and vintage leather'; I just think it smells deliciously manly. Apparently he feels it's a perfect mix of soap and fragrance, which gives him a fresh-out-of-the-shower scent without being too heavy. So if your husband-to-be is anything like mine, try slipping the body wash version in to the shower and see what happens.

Split Personality

This just came across my desk the other day and I think it's brilliant. Is it a nail polish? Is it a brush? It's both! It's the brand Nic's Sticks Paint & Go Lacquer Pen from O.P.I. Available in 24 colors, you'll be sure to find the perfect shade for you. The polish is contained in the tube so all you have to do is depress the top a couple of times to pump it down into the brush. Then you just paint it on. No muss, no fuss, and so easy to carry around for on-the-go touch ups. Oh, and it's fast drying, too. I told you it was brilliant!

Instant Relief

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a short family vacation to Whistler in Canada. I took a late flight from JFK on Friday night, after shooting a beautiful plus-size gown story in a suite at The Carlyle Hotel here in NYC. (It will be in the July/August 08 issue so be sure to keep a lookout for it!)

Anyway, as a friend was picking me up from the airport at the unseemly hour of two in the morning, I decided not to check luggage and opted instead to only pack FDA-approved, travel-sized toiletries so I could speed through customs and-potentially-not have to deal with lost bags. My friend and his girlfriend graciously drove me up to Whistler the next day. That 2-ish hour drive up from Vancouver might just have been the most spectacularly scenic stretch of road I have ever been on. (Of course, the John Denver tunes that we were cranking-and singing along to-certainly added to the ambience.) Anyway, I digress. My whole point for mentioning this was to let you know I was in a very cold climate. A very cold climate with slightly less than three fluid ounces of body lotion. Argh, dry skin drives me crazy!!

Perhaps I've become a little too like my dad, but with only four days up there I didn't want to buy a whole bottle only to have to bin it before I got back on the plane to come home. So I decided to wait it out. By the time I got home I felt like the only thing that could save my ravaged skin would be to immerse myself fully in a bath full of lotion. (Kind of a-la Cleopatra, who was famous for bathing in milk.) Not having such a tub ready and waiting, I reached for my dry-skin-fighting weapon of choice, Vaseline's Intensive Rescue Moisture Locking Lotion. Ahhhh, relief. (It claims to instantly triple the moisture levels in your skin and lock it in for 24 hours, which sounded like just what the doctor ordered.) I'm not sure if my skin has forgiven me quite yet, but I think we are back on speaking terms at least.

You might be wondering why only my ramblings are being posted and you haven't heard from the far more eloquent Dana in a while. The fact is that she is recuperating at home after having back surgery last week, so it's just going to be you and me for a couple more weeks I'm afraid. We are all hoping for her speedy recovery, especially Maureen-our fantastic new intern-and me, who are trying to hold down the fort in her absence. Get well soon Dana!

Just Brilliant

A Chanel lipstick is a thing of beauty. Period. I am working on a makeup story for our next issue-shhhh, don't tell-and amid the myriad of lipsticks lying on my desk, one shines like a beacon of stylishness. The sleek black case of the Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Colour hides the gold "push in, pull out" base-I will admit it took me a full 30 seconds to figure out how to open it, but it was totally worth the monkey-with-a-peanut moment. The color I have in my hand is called Brilliant, and it is; the name, CHANEL, etched in to the perfectly formed bullet of color, with luminous gold specks throughout for a lustrous, satiny finish. And with other colors in the range called such provocative names as Lover, Temptation and Voluptuous, it's the perfect accompaniment to the little black dress-or white one.

Reem Acra Fashion Show

Fashion week might be coming to a close, but the designers have saved the best for last. I just got back from Reem Acra. And all I can say is, "Wow!" The parade of gorgeous girls showed off rich ensembles infused with texture and sophistication. Body-hugging silks and slinky charmeuses were paired with metallic brocades and gold-matte hardware. She also implemented a total unexpected touch-felt-into adorable capelets, skirts and coats. After such a spectacular showing, I can't even imagine how fantastic Reem's bridal collection will be this spring. And I'm really looking forward to seeing her fashion show at the New York Bridal Market in April.

Timeless Beauty

OK, can we just talk for a minute about how gorgeous and romantic this look is? We were at the Carmela Sutera bridal show in NYC, and model after model came down the runway with these soft, feminine curls and 'just bitten' glossy lips. It's a totally fresh take on timeless beauty, and is perfect for today's bride.

No one wants to look back at their wedding pics and cringe because they'd tried out a vivid new eye shadow or some cutting edge hairdo-save that for going out with your girlfriends. By keeping your hair and makeup classic you will be able to have your photos on display for years to come. The best part is that with the right products, you can recreate this at home. Go with a hint of color on the lips like the UltraLight Gloss from Estee Lauder in Nectar Light, a sweep of blush on the cheeks-Benefit's Georgia (a soft peachy color) should do the trick, a pop of mascara to open up the eye, and you, too, can have that 'barely-there' glow.

Bridesmaids Revisited

If you haven't seen the movie 27 Dresses, run, don't walk, to the nearest theater. I'll cop to the fact that it's totally formulaic-you know what's going to happen at the end before the opening credits even finish rolling (if not sooner)-but it's super cute, laugh-out-loud funny and James Marsden is a total hottie, so what's not to love? And, hello, it's about weddings! It's like, the ultimate chick-flick (and a good cautionary tale for all you brides-to-be about to choose your bridesmaids' dresses!)

Now, I'm no Katherine Heigl, but I have been in my fair share of weddings. And while none of the dresses I've been asked to wear were anything like the ones you see in the movie, and while they have all been perfectly lovely dresses, they were, each and every single one of them, without a doubt, a bridesmaid's dress. And I know that every bride likes to think that she's choosing a dress her friends will wear again, but c'mon ladies: Would you wear this dress out in public?

Even with a shortened hem? I thought not. (In the name of total honesty, I did actually wear one of my bridesmaid's dresses on one other occasion. Halloween. Enough said.)

Luckily, a lot of designers today are taking cues from both the red carpet and the runway, infusing their bridesmaid's collections with frock star quality. Which means that your BFFs won't have to dedicate an entire closet to the monstrosities of organza ruffles. Check out David's Bridal-they always have a few dresses each season that I'm completely dying for, because even though they're technically bridesmaid's dresses, I can totally see myself wearing them to a summer garden party or a cocktail soiree here in the city. I mean, how cute are these?

It's super cute and everyone knows that brown is the new black, so she'll look totally chic for your big day. Later, she can just throw a cardi over it for a great date-night dress, or wear it solo to a cocktail party or a night out on the town. The other great thing about Ann Taylor Celebrations? One of my all-time favorite solutions to the bridesmaids' dress dilemma, however, is to just ask your besties to wear a dress of a certain color and a certain length-and leave the style up to them. For instance, when my best friend got married last year, she asked us to wear floor-length black dresses-that was it. The result: We all wore different style dresses, depending on what we thought looked best for our figures, but everyone looked (and felt) great. And because the dresses had unifying elements, we all still had that special 'I'm-with-the-bride' vibe. Check it out:
