5 Bridal Updos: Fabulous Wedding Hair Ideas

As a bride-to-be, you probably understand the importance of your wedding hairstyle. Many brides begin planning this months in advance to be sure they look their best on the big day. Updos are one of the most popular wedding hairstyles and for good reason—they are elegant, charming and work well with most wedding themes. Here are 5 bridal updos that will never go out of style.1. The Classic Ballet Bun UpdoBallet buns are beautiful. In this hairstyle, medium-length and long tresses are pulled back to create a perfectly formed bun at the back of the head. Because the look is very simple and chic, these updos look great with accessories, such as flowers, wedding headpieces and veils.2. The Classic French Twist UpdoAnother beautiful and timeless classic, the French twist, is a wonderful option for the wedding day hairstyle. With this hairstyle, tresses are swept back and secured with pins into a charming twist at the back of the head. This works perfectly with medium hairstyles and can be dressed up a bit to look breathtaking. Decorative pins, flowers and tiaras are perfect with the classic French twist.3. Prom Style Updo with CurlsThis look is gorgeous whether you will be wearing a headpiece, veil or something else. Medium and longer-length hair is swept back and secured at the crown of the head. Then, the excess hair is curled and pinned to create a perfectly controlled but sophisticated look. To take this classic ‘prom style’ look and make it more mature and classy, sweep longer bangs over your forehead to one side and pin. This look can be worn with accessories, but stands alone quite beautifully.4. Elegant Side Updo with Flowers or AccessoriesAnother very simple yet sophisticated and stunning look is the elegant side updo. Medium or long hair is smoothed to one side at the nape of the neck and secured with pins into a beautiful roll or bun. Bangs can be swept to the side as well, creating a more sophisticated look. This hairstyle is absolutely gorgeous with several small flowers or one large flower tucked in at the top of the roll. This is an especially beautiful hairstyle which complements bridal jewelry—although, it’s best to avoid a veil with this updo.5. Messy but Chic UpdoFor this hairstyle, the hair is brought back in sections starting with the top of the head. It is then secured with pins, yet wispy strands of hair are left sticking out. The look is continued all the way down the back of the head, creating a messy and very modern-chic look. This is a wonderful look for the modern bride who will not be wearing a veil. Headpieces look stunning with this updo and so does the bride!Updos are classic and are always in style—no matter the season or theme of the wedding. Use these 5 wedding updo ideas to help get your creative juices flowing so you can decide on your own wedding hairstyle.

Tips for a Dazzling Smile

Smile! White teeth are a bridal must.Photography: Luciana PampaloneThe best way to ensure a radiant smile? Good overall health, says Gerald Curatola, D.D.S., a New York-based dentist. Dr. Curatola says research shows a correlation between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. He recommends that in addition to following an at-home dental hygiene regime, you learn to practice good nutrition and stress management—beauty from the inside out. Which Foods?Curatola recommends following a diet that includes lots of leafy greens and whole grains. Eliminate refined sugar (that means no white bread or white sugar), which promotes gum disease. Be sure to eat foods that are high in antioxidants, like spinach and kale, berries and pomegranates, which help the body fight disease. You should also avoid foods that tend to have an inflammatory effect on body tissue, such as luncheon meats and hot dogs and even dairy products, if possible.Tooth-Cleaning Tips Since most people tend to spend less than two minutes at a time brushing their teeth, they don’t reach the harmful, sticky plaque that develops on the teeth and in hard-to-reach areas in the mouth. An electric toothbrush can help with this, Dr. Curatola says, but try one that comes equipped with a two-minute timer so that you do the best job possible. As for teeth whitening, Dr. Curatola cautions against overusing over-the-counter products in order to get fast results. Be sure to follow the instructions on the box carefully or opt to have your dentist do the procedure in his office. Big-Day CountdownImmediately ditch the alcohol-based mouthwash and toothpaste. The alcohol dries out your mouth, killing the beneficial bacteria.Start a healthy diet. Dr. Curatola believes this to be the basic groundwork for a gorgeous smile.Six months out: See your dentist for a checkup so that any problems with teeth or gums can be treated well in advance. This is also the time to discuss options like whitening or even more complicated procedures, like bonding or veneers. Three months out: See your dentist for another cleaning. One month out: If you plan to have an in-office whitening, schedule an appointment now. For Healthy White TeethEat: crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, cauliflower, pears and cucumbers.Almonds are a good choice too. “Hit the crudités at parties,” Dr. Curatola advises. These foods are high in fiber, so they act like tiny toothbrushes scrubbing away at your teeth as you eat. You’ll be snacking in a healthy way and whitening your teeth at the same time.Avoid: dark liquids like coffee or red wine and deeply pigmented curry dishes. Also, stay away from carbonated drinks (the carbonation can increase acidity in your mouth, making tooth enamel more porous and prone to staining).

Golden Girl

You can go for the gold at home or in a salon, but whichever method you choose, the first step is to exfoliate, says Cindy Barshop, self-tan maven and owner of Completely Bare Spas in New York and Palm Beach. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that inhibit absorption to ensure a more even finish and a longer-lasting tan.For DIY-ers:After shaving, exfoliating and moisturizing, make sure your skin is completely dry. (Water is a barrier and can lead to uneven results.) “I like skin to air dry,” says Barshop, “since even a towel can leave it slightly damp.” She recommends that tanning newbies use a product with a blend of self-tanner and moisturizer, as it will allow you to build a tan gradually for a more authentic-looking result. “Apply one layer in the morning and another in the evening,” says Barshop. “That way, any streaks that result from the first application can be neutralized by the second.” It’s also imperative to use a formula that suits your skin tone: If you’re fair-skinned, use one designed for that type. Don’t think you can expedite the tanning process by using something for a darker complexion—it will just look fake. And do consider a tanner that contains a little shimmer; the luminous particles mimic dewy skin while a matte finish is likelier to show imperfections. When applying the product to your face, use one specifically meant for that area. These are less concentrated so you’ll avoid that Oompa-Loompa hue, and there’s less chance of breakouts. Clarins Liquid Bronze Tanning TipsWhen applying a self-tanner, wash and exfoliate hands aftr working on each section of your body (legs, arms, etc.). This prevents color from accumulating on your hands—a telltale sign you’ve been using a self-tanner! If you do overdo it, the only remedy is to start again, says Barshop. Exfoliate in the shower to remove the color. To prolong your tan, moisturize regularly and reapply the self-tanner once or twice a week, as needed. Exfoliate as little as possible, and limit shaving, which removes the top layer of skin that holds the pigment. ModelCo Self Tanning GlovesFor salon-goers:Getting a professional spray tan assures a streak-free result, but it does take a little longer to dry than the at-home varieties. (Barshop suggests a light dusting of talcum powder to get rid of the tacky feeling.) Don’t moisturize right before you go for your treatment, since this forms a barrier on your skin that’s hard for the spray to penetrate. It’s normal for the excess to come off on fabric, so be sure to wear dark, loose-fitting clothes to the appointment—don’t worry, the color will come out in the wash. Wait an absolute minimum of three to four hours before you shower (eight is generally recommended), but if possible do it the next morning. Barshop recommends doing a trial run or two in the months leading up to the wedding as results may vary slightly from person to person. (Be sure to have the same technician work on you for consistency.) Have the real treatment done about three days before the wedding. <//strong></ strong=""><//></ strong=""><//></><//></ strong=""><//></><//></><//></><//></ strong=""><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></ strong=""><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></><//></

Face Time

CLEANSER: For a glowing, look-at-me complexion, cleanse morning and night in order to remove accumulated dirt and grime. By prepping your skin for the rest of your regimen, cleansing allows active ingredients in your products to be more easily absorbed, says Dr. Erin Welch, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Be sure to use tepid water, as hot can leave your skin irritated and dry. SCRUB: Use an exfoliater to slough off pore-clogging skin cells and reveal a more radiant complexion. Welch advises using one with synthetic beads that are uniform in size, shape and surface. Stay away from harsh formulations with nut shells, fruit pits or other irregularly shaped particles as they can potentially irritate skin, damage blood vessels or cause little tears on the skin’s surface. TONER: Designed to restore the skin’s natural pH balance, toners help rid the face of any residual soap while also refreshing and reviving. Make sure you stay away from toners that contain alcohol or witch hazel, warns Welch. These can strip the skin of its natural oils, which paradoxically causes excessive oil production and possible breakouts. Instead, choose a toner with hydrating properties, like hyaluronic acid to add moisture.MOISTURIZER: Moisturizers not only keep skin nourished and hydrated, they may also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are hundreds of them on the market, all addressing different needs and concerns, but everyone can benefit from a daily moisturizer with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, says Welch. (Remember, sun damage is cumulative. The sun’s rays affect skin in different ways: UVA Ages you, while UVB Burns you.) Look for a product with an SPF of at least 15; this gives skin 15 times more safe-exposure time than it would have unprotected. At night, when skin gets a break from daily environmental assaults, it naturally rejuvenates, making it better able to absorb and retain nutrients packed into creams and lotions. Welch recommends using a formula with retinol, an antioxidant that increases cell turnover and collagen production, to expedite the process. Also, consider changing your product seasonally: Use a light lotion or cream in humid conditions and a heavier one in winter to combat the dehydrating effects of cold air.EYE CREAM: We need to pay extra attention to the delicate eye area. Since the skin here is thinnest, it’s more susceptible to damage and often the first place to show signs of aging, says Welch. As dry skin tends to emphasize wrinkles and fine lines, it’s extremely important to keep the area well hydrated and to regularly use a sunscreen to delay the onset of more! Look for formulations that contain ingredients like vitamin K to help combat dark circles, and caffeine for treating under-eye puffiness.Beauty BarThis St. Ives cleanser contains no sodium laurel sulphates, so it’s easy on sensitive skin. The spherical particles in pHisoderm’s facial polish make this a very gentle formula. Kinerase’s toning mist has hyaluronic acid to attract water and make skin look plumper. Aveeno’s moisturizer with SPF 30 has total soy complex to brighten and even skin tone. Shiseido’s eye cream has an SPF 32 to guard against damaging UVA and UVB rays. Medium skin takes best to warmer shades—something with a touch of peach or orange. If you have a dark complexion, pick deep, lush berry tones.Lip Tip: Keep lips exfoliated by running a damp washcloth or toothbrush over them a few times a week. Moisturize with Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick SPF 15.Want a fuller-looking pout? Try Star Dazzlers from Rimmel London in Bedazzle.

Get Lush Wedding-Day Lashes

Not only long-wearing but also water-resistant, Clinique’s Lash Power Mascara, with its sleek oval wand, ensures that tears of joy are nothing to fear. Go for a sweeping effect with Courbe Virtuôse Mascara by Lancôme; it curls lashes and and keeps them that way for up to 12 hours. Even the tiniest lashes can’t escape the reach of Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Mascara, which lengthens and defines without clumping. Known among the in crowd as the mascara for luxe lashes, DiorShow Mascara Backstage Makeup will add star power to your big-day look. Turn up the volume with CoverGirl’s LashBlast Mascara—the extra-thick wand and ultra-profuse bristles deposit an enviable, luxurious coat on each lash. Boots Botanics Volumising Mascara with pro-vitamin B5, Rice Bran and Green Tea extract not only makes lashes look longer and thicker, but also helps protect them. Mascara 101Since every mascara brush is a different size and shape, how do you know which one is right for you? The bigger the brush, the fuller your eyelashes will look, says Jillian Veran, director of artistry for Prescriptives Cosmetics. A small mascara brush allows for precise application; a wider, curved brush gives extra lift at the middle of the lash line so eyes appear larger. The average shelf life of a tube of mascara is about three months, says Veran. After that, throw it out; otherwise, bacteria buildup can cause infection. Keep the lid screwed on tightly when not in use and don’t pump the wand, cautions Veran, as that will force air into the tube and dry the mascara out more quickly. To apply: Place the brush at the base of the lash line and wiggle from side to side. This blurs the line between the lid and the lashes, making them appear fuller. Sweep the brush up for a wide-open look and to the side for a sexy, cat-eyed look. To prevent clumps, apply the second coat before the first completely dries, advises Veran. Tools of the TradeFor eyes that look wider and more awake, curl your lashes first. 1. Shu Uemura’s curler is a favorite of makeup artists; its generous width suits any eye shape, and silicone padding ensures a perfect curl without crimping. 2. After applying mascara, get rid of any clumps with a comb, like the one on Mally’s combination wand; its metal prongs slide through lashes to seperate them; use the brush for a natural finish.3. For pesky strays, Japonesque makes a precision curler whose small size allows you to reach each and every hair. 4. Sounds simple, but an intoxicating, sensual bouquet is the mysterious result. Délices de Cartier Eau Fruitée, a cheeky scent with undertones of sandalwood, boasts a hand-carved raspberry, fuchsia and champagne-hued bottle with a floral-shaped stopper.BOTTOM ROW, FROM RIGHT: Nouvel Amour from Ajne Parfumerie & Apothecary, a synthesis of pink grapefruit, Bulgarian heirloom roses, Himalayan liquid amber and Madagascar vanilla, is said to strengthen the heart chakra. A butterfly stopper tops Mariah Carey’s fragrance, M, a symphony of marshmallow, patchouli and Moroccan incense. The Tahitian tiare flower, the heart of the fragrance, is the inspiration for the bottle. Muse by Oilily is light and romantic, perfect for today’s bride.

Get a Winning Wedding Smile

What best complements your wedding gown? A dazzling white smile, of course. Steven A. Brisman, D.M.D., in Scarsdale, New York, recommends an in-office tooth-whitening procedure for the best results. Dr. Brisman, a prosthodontist—a specialist in aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry—recommends a two-part method.First, he says, the dentist applies bleach to your teeth for one hour in his office. Then he sends you home with trays and bleaching gel to use for 30 to 60 minutes a day for up to 14 days. Results vary, but your teeth may be three to four shades whiter than previously—and they should stay gorgeous for up to two years; after that, you can use your trays and more gel for touchups, as needed. Cost: approximately $850. Dr. Brisman prefers the professional procedure to over-the-counter methods, because, he says, “You should be given a complete dental evaluation, including X-rays, followed by a thorough cleaning. This is to determine whether the procedure is right for you.”Schedule the procedure two to four weeks before your wedding. “This way, you’ll eliminate any post-op sensitivity,” Dr. Brisman says. “And you won’t be as crazed as you might be if you wait till the last minute.”

Bridal Beauty Overview

Every bride wants to be gorgeous on her wedding day—little wonder, since you'll be watched closely by three important audiences (your groom, your guests, and your photographer's camera). The following beauty tips will help make sure you'll be ready for this most photographed, most gazed upon day of your life. Perfect Skin"For beautiful, silky skin the day of your wedding, start working on it right after you get engaged," says Yasmeen Djerradine, owner of the Yasmeen Djerradine Institut de Beaute day spa in New York City. To begin, ask a dermatologist or aesthetician for an assessment of your skin. Both are armed with powerful treatments to control the signs of aging and improve skins clarity. Most important, you want to avoid any additional damage to your delicate dermis. Next, schedule a facial. Today's non-irritating facials—packed with oxygen, vitamin C, seaweed and essential oils—are great for stimulating the vital functions of the skin, days Djerradine. And don't forget the rest of you! Body treatments, like the Power Peel or seaweed body wrap, work wonders on rough spots on the back, chest, elbows and knees. At home, use products that mimic prescription and spa remedies. Wash twice a day with a gentle cleanser. Use an a.m. moisturizer with SPF 15 and alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids to reduce the appearance of fine lines. At night, treat skin to a more intensive moisturizer. Though its difficult in these busy days of wedding planning, try to stay calm. Stress triggers the hormones that affect acne, says Rena Brand, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. If you feel the tingly sensation that's a sure sign of an imminent breakout, Dr. Brand suggests mixing a teaspoon of table salt in a cup of clean warm water. Soak a piece of gauze in the liquid and use it as a compress on the troubled spot. That should help prevent a small breakout from becoming a large one. If you do break out the week of the wedding, don't panic. Ask your dermatologist to administer a mild cortisone injection, which will soothe the inflammation. "It's best if the injection is given a few days or a week before the wedding, but you can do it that day in an emergency," says Dr. Brand. <//pagebreak>Flawless MakeupNo Regrets: Become a Beautiful Bride• Get your manicure the day before the wedding. Your hands will look great for the rehearsal dinner, you'll have one less time-consuming task on the big day, and you'll know for sure your polish is set before you touch your gown.• Whether you're doing your makeup yourself or going to a professional, do a complete practice run in advance. Take photographs to record the look you choose, and be sure to write down exactly what products and shades were used.• The best way to choose your hairstyle is the old-fashioned way: Rip pictures you like out of magazines and start experimenting. Consider comfort and durability as well as appearance—you don't want a look that requires enough hairspray to turn you into a fire hazard! "The number-one thing brides need to know about wedding-day makeup: There shouldn't be any surprises," says Robert Huitron, a New York City-based makeup artist. "You want to look like yourself—but with more oomph!" This generally means that less is more, and you should stay close to your natural look. If you plan to use a professional makeup artist, its a good idea to book her about four months before the wedding, and to experiment with colors and techniques at least a month before the date, suggests Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist Natalie Miller. To find your makeup style, collect magazine photos of makeup looks you love. It's also helpful to bring a good picture of yourself so the artist can see how you normally photograph, to help determine which features to play up. Also bring a picture of your wedding gown, and your hairstyle if that has been determined already. Do color rehearsals. Try different palettes (taking your gown's formality and style and the wedding's time of day into consideration) and take photos to pick the winning look. Also note the products and shades used so you can duplicate those choices on the big day. Our suggestions: For a solid base, start with a long-lasting foundation. Looking for the perfect match? Apply a sample and then step outdoors for a natural-light check, says Huitron. Apply the foundation with a dry sponge, then set with a powder puff. (If you're having an outdoor wedding, be sure to use a foundation with a built-in SPF so you dont begin the honeymoon with a burn.) For eyes, think smudgeproof and waterproof—tears of joy shouldn't trigger smears of worry. Even if you don't usually wear eyeshadow, try adding just a hint of color for the big day. To make it last, begin with a base coat on lids of your regular foundation (blended will and blotted to remove any excess) or an eye primer made for the job. Use a lip liner only one shade darker than your lipstick, suggests Miller, and blend the liner into your lipstick to prevent the harsh look of an outlined mouth. For stay-put color, apply lipstick with a lip brush. <//pagebreak>Knockout NailsWho won't look at your hands on your wedding day? "Start now to get them in great shape to show off that ring," says Dida Paraschivoiu, manicurist at the Avon Centre Salon and Spa in New York City. For salon results at home, rub moisturizer into cuticles every night to soothe those ragged edges. Give your nails a buff and shine every couple of days. With the coarse side of an emery board, shape the nail, then use the smoother side to fine tune. Next, use a buffing block to soften ridges on the nail. Once a week, add polish: Start with a base coat to fill ridges. For color, choose a long-wearing, chip-resistant enamel. Seal with a quick-drying top coat. To strengthen tips, apply the top coat underneath the nail as well. If you're going for acrylic nails, test them two weeks prior to the wedding to prevent allergic reactions. Gorgeous Hair"If hair isn't in great condition, no style will work," says Christophe Belkalemi, senior stylist at Jacques Dessange salon in New York City. First stop: a consultation. Depending on your lifestyle and hair type, you may need to detoxify the scalp, condition the ends or add moisture to your hair. Your stylist can advise you on specific products for your needs. "Determine the basic shape of what you're going for at least six months in advance," says Belkalemi. Get a trim early on to begin establishing that shape. If you color your hair and are happy with the shade, stay with it. But if you think you'd like to change your shade or try coloring for the first time, go ahead—"Just leave yourself at least a few months to live with a new hue." Finally, "get your last haircut about two weeks before the wedding," says Belkalemi. "That's when the haircut's true shape emerges." <//pagebreak>Brow Wow—Grooming EssentialsWith DIY plucking, it's all too easy to get tweeze happy, says Christine Chin, eyebrow guru to stars like Gisele Bundchen and Penélope Cruz.Your brows may end up unbalanced—too thick at one end and too thin at the other. For goof-proof shaping, Chin recommends seeing a professional. But for at-home grooming, her advice is to keep it to a minimum. Remove unwanted hairs between brows, then clean up strays just below them. (Tweezing on top will mess with the natural shape.) No single shape works on everybody, Chin says, but in general, your brow should follow the line of the bone just above your eye.No Regrets: Become a Beautiful BrideGet your manicure the day before the wedding. Your hands will look great for the rehearsal dinner, you'll have one less time-consuming task on the big day, and you'll know for sure your polish is set before you touch your gown.
