One Fine Day: Amy & Ben in San Francisco, CA

Attorneys Amy Tovar and Ben Horwich searched high and low for a wedding venue, but ended up choosing one that was just a ten-minute walk from their San Francisco home. "I had always thought Flood Mansion would be a wonderful place to get married," says Amy. "But I guess I needed to see all the other options out there first — wineries, ballrooms, hotels and so on — to be sure it was right for us." The early-20th-century mansion has incredible views of San Francisco Bay and provides outdoor areas for the ceremony and cocktails, as well as an inside space for dinner and dancing.

The couple hired wedding planner Jocelyn Arelt of Arelt Event Design to guide them through the planning process. Both their late grandmothers had loved gardenias, so Amy decided to use this as inspiration for the event. Then she chose a mix of bright pink, chocolate brown, white and green as the color scheme. "I wanted a look that was sophisticated, fresh and not stuffy," she says.

On the September wedding day, guests were greeted at the mansion’s front gate by Amy and Ben’s mothers and then walked to the courtyard for the ceremony. There, at the steps to the building, were urns filled with fluffy white hydrangeas and magnolia leaves. Pretty programs were waiting for guests at their seats.

The couple exchanged vows they’d written themselves, and Ben stepped on a wineglass, a Jewish tradition. "I’m so happy we wrote our own vows. It gave us the opportunity to tell everyone present exactly why we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together," Amy reveals.

After guests shouted "Mazeltov!" a mariachi band began to play — a nod to Amy’s Mexican heritage. The band entertained during the cocktail hour, as guests sipped blackberry mojitos and champagne and sampled passed hors d’oeuvres that included ahi tuna cones, chicken wonton "tacos" and mini burgers.

Afterward, everyone entered the venue’s grand hall; each table was named after a restaurant where something meaningful had occurred for the couple, such as their first date. Gardenias — the inspiration for the wedding’s decor — also accented the escort-card table.
