Kamalame Cay, The Bahamas

Almost immediately upon arriving at Kamalame Cay, the real world seems like another place entirely. Set off the Bahamian island of Andros, this family-run island retreat is dedicated to barefoot luxury—meaning, guests enjoy beautiful accommodations, white-glove service and gourmet cuisine, but none of the high-tech trappings of modern life. There are no phones or TVs on property, and internet access is only available at reception (though logging on is gently discouraged).

The decompression begins as you make your way to the island. Travelers can fly to Nassau or Andros Island airports from many spots in the U.S. Andros is only a one-hour flight from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Guests who land at Andros then take a private ferry ride to the resort. If you land in Nassau, you can hop a 15-minute charter flight to Andros or, for the full James Bond glam experience, take a seaplane directly to the cay—which will land right on the beach.

Set on 96 acres, the resort has 19 plush seaside rooms and suites, plus a Great House where guests gather for drinks and meals. A pool ringed by silver palms, an open-grill Tiki Bar, and lush foliage help complete the Fantasy Island setting. Guests spend their days exploring the island by foot or bike, playing board games, snorkeling, kayaking, diving in the clear waters or snoozing in hammocks. The spa offers treatments like coconut scrubs, honey body wraps and couples massages. Day trips can be arranged to explore Andros or other tourist sites, but really, there’s little chance you’ll want to leave (room rates start at $407 a night and include breakfast and some activities; kamalame.com).
