›› Driving distance from New York City: 2 hours, 30 minutes; driving distance from Philadelphia: 4 hours, 20 minutes

Although quaint and intimate with only eight guest rooms, La Maison Blanche on New York’s Shelter Island still has a sophisticated edge. Reserve room 8 and you’ll be treated to an enormous windowed bathroom with a large tub and separate shower. On the main floor, the eatery is sleek and wood-paneled and features an excellent wine list accompanied by a brasserie-style menu.

For a more charming atmosphere, take your meals on the wide porch, which like the hotel itself, dates back to the 1800s. Or ask for a picnic lunch to bring to nearby Crescent Beach. After an afternoon of beachcombing, challenge fellow guests to a game of bocce over a glass of wine and ask the staff to fire up the grill (room rates start at $275 a night; maisonblanchehotel.com).

›› Driving distance from Chicago: 6 hours; driving distance from Minneapolis: 2 hours.

Completely unplug at Canoe Bay, a rustic, yet oh-so-luxurious hideaway in the verdant woods of northwestern Wisconsin. Guest rooms at the 280-acre property feature cedar walls, vaulted ceilings and giant windows with views of pine, spruce and fir trees. Suites boast fireplaces, private decks and one of our favorite romantic amenities—a giant bathtub with a view. Settle into the bubbles with a glass of bubbly and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife: fox, deer and pheasants and colorful birds, including yellow warblers, red-bellied woodpeckers, scarlet tanagers and blue jays. Breakfast and lunch are served in-room; dinners, offered in the main dining room, are prix-fixe and showcase the freshest in local ingredients (room rates start at $350 a night; canoebay.com).

Step into the Gilded Age when the Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts ruled commerce and the social scene with a stay at the 33-room Vanderbilt Grace in picturesque Newport, Rhode Island. Built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt in 1909 for his mistress, the beautiful mansion is located in the center of town—far enough from the prying eyes of family members and their grand seaside cottages on the Cliff Walk. Their loss is your gain, since the grand home is located within walking distance to all of Newport’s shopping, restaurants and the famous marina. The beaches, tennis courts and, yes, grand homes of the Gilded Age are less than five minutes via car (room rates start at $275 a night and include champagne breakfast; vanderbiltgrace.com).

›› Driving distance from Los Angeles: 1 hour, 45 minutes; driving distance from San Francisco: 5 hours, 45 minutes.

Laid-back Santa Barbara sits between the mountains and the sea, making it a primo getaway spot, as well as a fantastic wine region. The area, which was first settled by the Spanish in the late 1780s, is robust with whitewashed mission churches and other historic sights. Set amid it all is the stately Canary Hotel. Decor here is influenced by the Spanish settlers; the rooms are breezy and feature four-poster beds. Spend your days at the various tasting rooms that dot the foothills of the nearby Santa Ynez Mountains. Back at the hotel, watch the sunset from the outdoor rooftop lounge, complete with a fireplace, before sipping, swirling and savoring local vintages at Coast, a hip restaurant located off the lobby (room rates start at $270 a night; canarysantabarbara.com).
