Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort

The mineral-rich waters of the world’s largest and deepest hot spring, the Great Pagosa Aquifer, feed 18 soaking pools at Colorado’s Springs Resort & Spa, located on the banks of the San Juan River. The waters have been utilized for their restorative properties for over 150 years. Legend has it that a local Native American tribe, in the grip of a plague, gathered on the banks of the river and pleaded to the gods for a cure. The next morning, they found bubbling warm waters, which healed them of their illness. Today, guests of the 50-room resort can soak in the naturally heated pools (water temps range from 83 to 114 degrees) to alleviate all their aches and pains. The pools consist of two adults-only spaces, a bubbling hot bath with views of the property and a hideaway built for two (The Springs Resort & Spa, 165 Hot Springs Blvd., Pagosa Springs, CO; rates start at $159 a night; pagosahotsprings.com).

Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort & Spa

Tucked in the foothills of Japan’s legendary Mount Fuji, The Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort & Spa blends modern amenities like sleek furnishings with ancient Japanese healing traditions. In the spa, two thermal hot springs baths soothe away stress. All eight treatment rooms are equipped with walk-in mist showers. You can choose spa treatments like aqua massages, algae body wraps and marine clay masks. Guests of the 56-room hotel can also enjoy mountain views, complimentary afternoon tea as well as access to a nearby shrine of good luck (Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort & Spa,1320 Gora Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan; rates start at about $266 a night; hakone.regency.hyatt.com).

Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort

In the heart of the Costa Rican rain forest, near Central America’s most active volcano, Arenal, sits the newly restored 114-room Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort. The lush property encompasses mineral-rich rivers, waterfalls and pools, all heated by Arenal’s subterranean magma. The spa is situated amidst the flowing mineral waters and pools so that guests can soak before and after their treatments. The facility also features 11 open-air treatment bungalows, three tezmecals (or sweat lodges) and a breezy yoga studio. Tabacón’s rooms, which are outfitted in Costa Rican woods, overlook the volcano, the rain forest or the hotel’s gorgeous gardens (Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort, 13km North-West from La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela, Costa Rica; rates start at $245 a night; tabacon.com).
