Hot on the Trail
The Pocono Mountains are a biker's paradise. Explore the Switchback Trail, which was once a narrow-gauge railway and is now a National Historic Trail that runs along the rim of Mount Pisgah before dropping into the Mauch Chunk Creek Valley. Local outfitters Blue Mountain Sports will rent you a couple of bikes, supply maps and helmets and shuttle you back to your starting point at the end of the ride. The path runs along a lovely lake and into a hemlock forest. Eventually, you'll wind up in the town of Jim Thorpe , a well-preserved Victorian village that was built into the side of a mountain. It's the perfect spot for a post-ride lunch. For more information go to bikejimthorpe.com.
Another option: Hickory Run State Park, which offers miles of shaded paths and the amazing Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark that's full of massive rocks left by the glaciers that covered this area thousands of years ago. You're guaranteed to have a romantic ride into the past. For more information visit dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks.
Have Boots, Will Travel
Pack your sturdiest hiking boots and get ready for some fabulous scenery. Romantic waterfalls are waiting to be discovered, even on easy trails, such as the Dingmans Falls Trail in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area. Hardy hikers will be thrilled to discover that 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail run through this area, as do white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and black bears. Keep an eye out for the tiny hummingbirds that live here, as well as the blue-beaked herons that feed in the river. For more information visit nps.gov/dewa.
