You may have heard about the Pocono Mountains’ romantic, couples-only resorts, with their champagne-glass whirlpools and big round beds. But did you know that they’re located in a wooded wonderland? Yep, Pennsylvania’s Poconos boast 2,400 square miles of peaks and valleys laced with three rushing rivers, 13 picturesque waterfalls and more than 150 lakes. Seven state parks, nearly 90,000 acres of state forest and a 70,000-acre national recreation area provide river adventures, magnificent hiking trails and great winter skiing.

Grab your guy and your sense of adventure—it’s time to hit the hills!

Biking These mountains are a pedaler’s paradise. The region’s Rail-to-Trails, old railroad routes given new life as biking and hiking trails, are a great option. A prime example: the Lehigh Gorge Trail, 25 easy miles of an old railroad bed beside the 1,000-foot-high, fern-draped cliffs along the Lehigh River. State parks have their own lures. Consider the 1.4-mile Little Falls Trail in Promised Land State Park for views of the lower lake dam; the east branch of Wallenpaupack Creek, with its waterfall; or the amazing Boulder Field in Hickory Run State Park, bigger than six football fields and full of boulders left by glaciers eons ago. You can rent mountain bikes from local adventure outfitters. Explore on your own or join guided trips on prize trails like the Switchback, once a narrow-gauge railway and now a National Historic Trail that runs along the rim of Mt. Pisgah before dropping into the Mauch Chunk Creek Valley. You’ll eventually come to Jim Thorpe, a lovely Victorian village nestled into a mountain, a perfect spot for lunch and sightseeing.

Hiking Pack your sturdiest hiking boots and get ready for some fabulous scenery. With 15,000 acres and its own lake, Hickory Run State Park is a beauty. Head for the Archbald Pothole; formed more than 15,000 years ago, it is the world’s largest geological pothole at 38 feet deep and 42 feet wide. Romantic waterfalls await discovery, even on easy trails like the Dingmans Falls trail in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Hardy hikers will be thrilled to discover that 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the Poconos.

Horseback riding This is a fun year-round activity in the Poconos, and several stables offer guided trail rides. Autumn color is glorious along the trails, and a ride through the snow-covered countryside is a memory you’ll cherish.

Rafting Few activities top the adrenaline rush of rafting a great river, and the Pocono Mountains present plenty of opportunities to go for it. A trip between the exquisite, steep walls of the Lehigh River Gorge is unforgettable. Rowing What could be more romantic than the two of you drifting down the gentle waters of the Delaware in a canoe? Rent one yourselves, or join a guided paddle led by National Park Service rangers through the almost-40-mile-long Delaware Water Gap section of the river.

Boating You don’t have to leave your resort to enjoy many fun activities on the water. Most resorts have deep blue lakes with your choice of paddleboats, rowboats or sailboats. Ever wanted to water-ski? Here’s your chance to learn.Fishing Cast your poles on the lake at your resort, or head for the wilds. You could fish for a week in this neck of the woods and never visit the same place twice. And with 11,000 acres of stocked lake and 122 miles of stocked river, you can hardly miss catching something.

Golf If you crave the links, you won’t be disappointed. The Poconos boast 35 golf courses. Some are located right at the honeymoon resorts.Tennis There are courts galore there—indoors and out—so you’ll never have to wait for a game, and you’re almost guaranteed to find other honeymooners to join you in a doubles match. Love-love!

Swimming What’s your pleasure, pool or lake? You can take your pick at your resort. Or, head for the sandy lakeshores in the surrounding region for sunbathing action. Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest of these, offers 52 miles of uninterrupted shoreline and a public beach for sunning and sand-castle building.Ice-skating Love the cold temps? The Poconos are for you! When Old Man Winter arrives, the deep blue lakes turn into scenic ice-skating arenas, where you can snap pictures of each other making figure-eights against a background of whipped-cream snow. Back at the resort, indoor rinks let you lace up (ice skates or in-line skates) year-round.

Snow sports A handful of area ski resorts offer terrific skiing and snowboarding for everyone, from novices to black-diamond aces. Plus, all the ski areas and several resorts in the region have slopes for snow tubing, a popular new sport that doesn’t require lessons to enjoy; it’s as simple as sliding down the hill. You and your “snow man” can also go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing—you’ll find ideal, white-frosted terrain right outside the door at many of the resorts, as well as at the region’s state parks and forests. Snowmobiling is also available at the resorts and at the Delaware State Forest, which is laced with miles of snowmobile trails. Terrific sledding and thrilling tobogganing can also be enjoyed at perfect slopes at the resorts, and in some of the area’s parks.
