Star Finds in the South Pacific

When paparazzi-plagued celebs want time out of the spotlight, they cop a little R and R at one of these far-flung hideaways. You can, too.

Star Finds in the South PacificCelebrities often head to remote islands halfway around the world for their vacations. They choose posh resorts offering pure luxury, like those in the dreamy South Seas. And why not? These secluded and trendy hot spots have just a handful of rooms apiece (often without the distraction of telephones or televisions) and are designed to cater to your every whim. You’ll pay a pretty penny, but in return you’ll get only the best, from champagne dinners on your patio—or anywhere else you care to dine—to private beaches, reserved for you two alone. Read on to decide which of these exclusive outposts could be your secret honeymoon splurge. And don’t worry, we promise not to alert the press!

Wakaya Club, Fiji

This luxe private-island resort has attracted the likes of Celine Dion and her manager-husband, Rene Angelil, and Michelle Pfeiffer and her hubby, producer David Kelley. Bill and Melinda Gates even spent their honeymoon there. No doubt, these high-wattage couples traveled on their own private jets, but you, too, will arrive in style, flown in a small twin-engine plane from the international airport on the main island of Viti Levu.

Once at the Wakaya Club, you’ll find the rooms are full of island details, including bamboo four-poster beds, wooden floors made from native yuka trees and spacious, open-air lava-rock showers big enough for two. With only nine beachfront, thatch-roofed bures (Fijian bungalows), you’ll get as much privacy as you want. The resort celebrates ancient Fijian customs, too. A traditional lali drum serves as the dinner “bell,” and there’s a weekly Fijian feast called lovo, where mahimahi and root vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in a hot-stone underground oven. Daytime activities include snorkeling the surrounding reef, golfing on the property’s nine-hole course and hiking. And, since there are so few guests, tee times are never needed (Wakaya Island, Fiji; wakaya.com).

Hayman Island, Australia

For water lovers, this property, located on a private island in the Great Barrier Reef, is nothing short of liquid paradise. Top Australian sports stars and entertainers have vacationed there, as well as American celebs Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner and Robin Williams. In addition to Hayman Island’s many beautiful beaches and oft-photographed octagonal pool, it’s the world-class water sports that draw the big names. Guests can go scuba diving, parasailing and windsurfing, all without leaving the property. Whale-watching expeditions cruise the surrounding waters as well. There’s plenty to keep you busy indoors, too. Take a tour of the Hayman Art Collection to see Aboriginal paintings and tapestries, or gaze out your guest room window at the reef’s stunning Whitsunday Passage. The 214 villas and suites come with teak and wicker furnishings, sunken baths and terraces. All have superb vistas of the clear, blue water of the reef—which is almost as famous as its visitors (hayman.com.au).

Vatulele Island Resort, Fiji

Where do Hollywood A-listers in search of South Seas rapture go? Many can be found wiggling their toes in the sand at Vatulele Island Resort. There are just 18 bures there, all outfitted with king-sized beds, rugs made of richly textured tapa cloth and spacious patios. You’ll be hard-pressed to find even a newspaper on the island, so the two of you can remain remarkably unconnected. This escapism has appealed to actors Tom Cruise, Rachel Ward and Tommy Lee Jones, and tennis hunk Patrick Rafter. At Vatulele, guests ease into the resort’s barefoot-chic style. Shed your strappy sandals and swim in underground caves, snorkel among the kaleidoscopically-colored fish and pad around your waterfront bure in nothing but a pedicure. Dine on Pacific Rim cuisine, such as grilled fish and chicken cooked in spinach-like fa fa leaves, at a communal lantern-lit table. Of course, if you want to be alone, a private table for two can be arranged just about anywhere on the island. Now that’s getting away from it all (vatulele.com).

Blanket Bay, New Zealand

Brad and Jennifer honeymooned there. So why did Hollywood’s golden couple choose this tiny, 13-room luxury lodge in Glenorchy, a small village on New Zealand’s South Island? Blanket Bay is as far from the prying eyes of fans as one can get. Spend carefree days fishing for rainbow trout on Lake Wakatipu, touring a vineyard outside nearby Queenstown (the hotel’s cellar is full of wonderful local wines), riding horseback through sheep-filled meadows or simply unwinding by the massive stone fireplace in the Great Room. At night, snuggle on the beautiful terrace and warm up by the outdoor fireplace—as upscale as a campfire can get. Try to spot the Southern Cross constellation before heading inside together to your comfy honeymoon bed (blanketbay.com).

Hotel Bora Bora, French Polynesia

When Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, want to get away, they head to this volcanic island resort. Cher, Goldie Hawn and Eddie Murphy are also fans. The Hotel Bora Bora has 39 thatch-roofed villas and 15 over-water bungalows, featuring native-wood furniture, Polynesian crafts (such as carved wooden masks) and sundecks with steps that lead directly into the glorious turquoise-colored lagoon just outside. Plan to stay in one of the bungalows, and you can climb down the stairs and take a sunrise skinny-dip together before the sun comes up. Or, if you prefer to sleep in, have your breakfast—flaky French croissants served with slices of tropical papaya and mango—delivered to your room by canoe.

Later, swim with manta rays and snorkel in water as clear as an aquarium. Be sure to book a catamaran sunset cruise, on which you can salute the sun’s passage over the skyline with a frosty, locally brewed Hinano beer. Back on terra firma, take a taxi to Bloody Mary’s restaurant, a nearby watering hole where a star sighting is practically assured. (Everybody comes to Mary’s while on the island—it’s the place to be.) And who knows? You just might be seated next to James Bond himself. Not that you two lovebirds would notice (amanresorts.com)
