Paris…Venice…London… just saying the names of these cities conjures visions of romance. All of their unique attributes are too numerous to name, but let’s start with a few: the beauty, the history, the culture—not to mention iconic attractions that simply must be seen. Eiffel Tower, anyone? These six timeless European cities will inspire you now and for decades to come.

Champagne, check, candlelight, check. romance doesn't get any better than the tony Hotel Le Bristol, Paris.

Ah, Paris. Who doesn’t love this most romantic of cities? It’s not just the Beaux Arts architecture, the grand boulevards and the beautiful gardens that hold infinite appeal, but it’s also the unsurpassed museums, delectable cuisine and some of the best shopping in the world.

Do: Marvel at the architectural details, like stone gargoyles and a stunning stained-glass rose window, that are the hallmarks of the medieval Notre Dame Cathedral, set on an island in the Seine. Next stop, the Eiffel Tower, where you can take the elevator to the top for sweeping city views. Set aside a full day (or two) to enjoy the Louvre, home of the “Mona Lisa” and other famous works, like the “Venus de Milo” and Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People.”

Eat: Order the steak frites and soak up the bohemian ambience at Café de Flore, a legendary Left Bank bistro, which was a favorite of Picasso, Sartre and Hemingway (cafe-de-flore.com). Among the myriad gastronomic heavyweights of Paris, few have the cachet of La Tour D’Argent, whose ornate dining room overlooks the Seine and the skyline beyond. The house specialty is canard au sang (duck cooked in its own juices), and the wine cellar holds an impressive 450,000 bottles. Don’t worry—the sommelier is always on hand for suggestions (tourdargent.com).

Stay: Stars like Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu have been spotted at the exclusive Hotel Le Bristol, Paris, located just steps from the Champs-Élysée, on fashionable rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. As you enter the lobby, with its tapestries and crystal chandeliers, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into one of the palaces of King Louis XVI (hotel-bristol.com).
