You recently launched two new lines. Can you talk about the distinct qualities of each and what it’s like to design together?

We have worked together for more than 14 years and bounce ideas off one another all the time. Of the new lines, The Steven Birnbaum Collection is a sophisticated blend of classic cuts, clean lines and sleek, modern touches. For instance, many of the gowns have timeless tuxedo elements, like piping down the sides and sewn-in pockets. The other line, Robert Bullock Bride, is much more feminine, with soft layered chiffons and satins, muted colors like pink and champagne and silk floral embellishments. Our original line, Birnbaum & Bullock, which we design together, is couture in every sense: silk-lined gowns fashioned with opulent fabrics, such as silk shantung, and embellishments made with imported French laces. We don’t produce the same gown at three different price points: Each line remains true to our combined aesthetic, but at the same time they are three unique collections that will appeal to a different type of bride.

What’s the secret of your success in bridal fashion?

We have never lost sight of what a bride wants or needs; in fact, we designed the two new collections so we could reach a wider audience. At our trunk shows across the country, we meet with brides and hear their opinions. In addition, all our gowns are cut to individual measurements; there are no standard sizes. This allows our brides to customize their gowns, whether a subtle change on the neckline or the addition of a beaded bodice, making it truly one-of-a-kind. And while it’s our goal to help each bride find her dream dress, we always remind her to relax and use this time to celebrate with her friends and family.

What words of wisdom do you have for brides who are searching for that perfect gown?

One of our biggest pet peeves is that during the search brides often lose sight of their fiancé. Many women seem to choose their gown based on what their mother or girlfriends like best, and don’t consider their husband-to-be’s preference. Usually, when a bride has narrowed her choices down to two or three gowns, we ask her which one will take her fiancé’s breath away. Some brides have no idea! So when you make your final choice, consider your guy’s taste and what he finds attractive. We guarantee this: You’ll be thrilled by his reaction when you walk down the aisle.

• Trust your instincts and keep an open mind when you begin dress shopping. Also, consider the bridal consultant’s advice: It’s her job to make sure you look your best.
• Embroidered veils are an elegant touch and add just the right amount of interest to a minimalist gown. We love, too, that a veil is something that can be passed down through the generations.
• Keep to a minimum the number of people you shop with; we advise two at the most. Otherwise, the process can become overwhelming and confusing for the bride.
