Kelly & Todd
Twenty years ago, when I was only 14 and living in Sacramento, there was a boy who I found quite intriguing yet extremely infuriating. We hung around the same...
We hung around the same group of "Goth" kids and even went to a Siouxsie and the Banshees concert together.
He was quite bright, but stubborn. Though I've always enjoyed a good debate, I always found myself walking away from him when he would get on his soap box. In typical teenage fashion, the more he saw that I was annoyed by his presence, the harder he would try to kiss me.
Years went by. I moved to Los Angeles to study theater at California State University, Northridge, and he found his way to Copenhagen, Denmark. We both went on with our lives. Ignorant of the other's existence and blocked from any memories we had of each other. I was a single professional woman and doing quite well. He was an overgrown kid who had been married, divorced, and became the father of an exquisite child.
Fast-forward to a year ago (2006). Through the miracle of MySpace, I reconnected with some of my old friends. In my search for those I had memories of, I purposely sought him out. I typed his name, and there he was. I cannot tell you why I thought of him. I just did. After that, we began emailing, and from the start there were fireworks.
He and I found a strong connection and attraction. Soon I was planning a visit to see him. Before I even made it there, we had begun speaking daily (for hours sometimes). We had even begun uttering the words "I love you". He sent me love songs and beautiful notes every day.
With all of that build-up, I feared that seeing one another would only shatter the image. But it did not. Two trips to Copenhagen and one visit by him here, and things couldn't be better. On my most recent visit to see him, just two weeks ago (in 2007), he took me out for a romantic candlelit dinner.
He explained to me (quoting a Coldplay song he once sent to me, which touched me so) that I am the rock upon which he stands, and he wished to give me a rock that was as beautiful as me and my green eyes. At that time, he pulled out a custom-made ring of green diamonds and said "Kelly, will you marry me?" I said yes, of course.
