Behind the Scenes With the Bride of the Year 2001

When Bride of the Year winner Asia Goodwyn stepped into the Avon Salon & Spa in New York City’s Trump Tower, she felt as though she was 'stepping into someone else’s life.' Little did Asia realize that her fairy tale was just beginning.
Like many brides-to-be, Asia has been on the go since she and fiancé Valentine Edusa got engaged. And having just finished medical school this spring…well, it was clear that Asia could use some pre-wedding pampering.
We kicked off our winner’s 'Queen for a Day' adventure with a 30-minute rubdown. Massage therapist Susan Moebus concentrated on Asia’s neck and shoulders, 'probably the biggest stress areas for brides-to-be,' she notes.
Post-massage, Asia floated blissfully to the chair of spa manicurist Mara Taskin, who filed and polished Asia’s nails to ring-ready perfection - and employed that great manicure indulgence: a hand and arm massage. Asia, who usually does her own nails, became an instant fan. 'I could fall sleep right in this chair,' she said, smiling serenely.
From there it was into the expert hands of the salon’s resident celebrity, Eliza Petrescu, otherwise known as 'the eyebrow guru.' The woman responsible for the brows of celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Natasha Richardson quickly alleviated Asia’s fears about going too thin by crafting elegant arches that framed her face perfectly.
Final step: hair and makeup. Asia was eager to try two looks: soft and sweet; and dramatic and sophisticated. 'I look really young for my age,' explains the twenty-something Asia, 'so I’d love to appear more grown-up.' For her soft-and-sweet face, that meant makeup in neutral tones of beige, light brown and pale pink, and an intricate chignon updo. For Asia’s dramatic option, the Avon experts pulled out all the stops: glossy, deep-berry lips, eyes in shimmery dark browns, contoured cheeks and a Billie Holiday-style wave in her shoulder-length hair. 'I never thought I could look so beautiful!' Asia exclaimed.
