Bride of the Year 2001

Asia Yasmeen Goodwyn and Valentine Edusa have survived malaria, a three-year courtship and an ocean between them to win each other’s hearts - and ours. Chosen as the winners of Bridal Guide's 2001 Bride of the Year and Her Dream Home Wedding contest for their winning essay detailing how they met and what makes their relationship unique, the couple received $50,000 in prizes toward their wedding, honeymoon and home, including a wedding reception at the Russian Tea Room in New York City.

Asia and Valentine forged a deep friendship upon their initial meeting in 1995 in his native Ghana, when Asia had contracted malaria and Valentine helped nurse her back to health. The two medical students maintained their relationship over the long years apart after Asia returned to the United States - and knew it was true love when Asia revisited Ghana three years later. In fall 2001, their long wait ended as Bridal Guide helped them celebrate the wedding of their dreams.

Among the prizes Asia and Valentine won to make their special day even more fabulous are:

  • A wedding reception at New York’s fabled Russian Tea Room
