Tool Time

I’m a little obsessed with home improvement (hey, it’s my job) so I was thrilled to get a visit this week from the PR team at Lowe’s, Abby Buford and Amanda Monteleone, and poured over a huge binder of amazing stuff that Lowe’s carries. Lowe’s has a bridal gift registry now (lowes.com/registry), which makes complete sense with all the DIY and home improvement projects that newlyweds are inspired to do when they set up their first nest.

Abby told me “my first toolbox” has become a huge alternative theme to “traditional” bachelor parties. It makes for a fun, possibly outdoor, relaxed atmosphere kind of party—something truly guy-centric…finally! Custom tool aprons with the bride's and groom's names on it are a fun item to have made for the party (they can be used for barbecuing or gardening of course).

At Lowe’s, tools are the number one item that people put on their registry. Most popular is the DeWalt Compact Cordless Drill/Driver ($179). I smiled when I heard that because for our second anniversary my husband Kerry asked me to get him that for a gift, and I did, and he was so-o-o-o happy. He said it was the best quality tool he’s ever owned and it still makes me a little weepy to think about how happy he was about that drill.

The joy of tool ownership and a meticulous garage is something my husband and I witnessed for the first time (hey, people don’t own garages in New York City) at our across-the-street neighbor from our family’s summer shack in Nova Scotia. The two-story shingled garage Jonathan Taylor built rivals his house in size—and is bigger than our house for sure—and the interior is spotless, with every tool meticulously in place on the wall. We have a hammer and a screwdriver at our house, I think. And, I recall hanging up a picture using the heel of a shoe, before we got that handy hammer. Kerry would amble over to Jonathan’s and just come back saying I wish I had a …..insert any one of 120 tools here.

This cool tool Kobalt tool chest isn't available until June 2008.

One item, amongst the 40,000 Lowe’s has in stores, I particularly thought might float Jonathan’s boat (being a lobster fisherman, he actually owns a big boat) is the little over-the-top $1,700 Kobalt tool chest, which has a built-in 1.6 ft refrigerator and a Pioneer AM/FM CD stereo with iPod controls (June 2008 availability). The danger is your sweetie might never come out of the garage.
