Talking Trash
Our kitchen garbage can died a few weeks ago. We’re not wasting tears mourning its demise, because, frankly we had a hate-hate relationship with it. We hung onto it because it was pretty (never a good reason to hang onto the useless) shiny stainless steel and was an expensive wedding gift that I registered for—but have never been happy with it.
What exactly inspired the deep dislike of our Brabantia bin begins with its deeply flawed tall, narrow design. Bags fell down into it, and in order to get those bad boys out, one literally had to lie the can on its side on the floor, get down on your knees, wiggling and pulling the bag out sideways. Then there was the flap-open-happy lid with a tiny plastic snap closer that became moody about whether it would choose to stay closed or not.
I’ve been fantasizing about getting a new one ever since the one I covet was introduced. OXO Good Grips 10-gallon Stainless Steel Rectangular Trash Can has a motion control device for smooth and quiet lid-opening action. And to keep me from doing the horizontal mambo with garbage bags, the rectangular shape has tapered sides and an extra wide 14-inch mouth, which help you pull out a bag in a snap. Keeping your can clean is a breeze with their bag lock at the top, which holds trash bags around the plastic liner rim in the upright position, helping to keep garbage in the bag, not slopping up the bottom of your can.

To make sure of my choice, this weekend I went with my pal Cady (who was happily also on a garbage can mission) to the Container Store where we spent a half hour in the can dept stepping on pedals, waving our hands over motion detector sensors (we live life on the edge) and closely inspecting the various inner workings of several different brands, and I came away confident that this new can will pass muster. Oh, and Cady took home a can as well.
