Shop with a Purpose

I was strolling home from a photo shoot a couple weeks back, and stumbled upon an awesome little shop. It’s called Sustainable NYC (sustainable-nyc.com or 212-254-5400), and to take a quote directly from them, they offer “eco-friendly versions of everyday products and gifts.” I’m still obsessed with all things green, and it’s so refreshing to find companies that covet attractive products without the heavy carbon footprint. Here’s a sampling of the store and some of the eco-licious products they carry:

As you can see, they offer house wares and décor, and also beauty, cleaning products, clothing for all ages and a hodgepodge of other hand-selected goods. Dominique, of Sustainable NYC, thinks that the most original wedding gift would be their worm bin composter. Now talk about making a statement! The other cool thing about them is that all the furniture and fixtures are recycled and for sale, as is the wallpaper and paint. They use an alternative energy source and their sign is lit with solar power—even the building itself was made with 300-year-old reclaimed wood! I gotta give credit where it’s due.

Unfortunately, they don’t retail online yet, but will be soon. Nowadays, though, it’s easy being green and is a trend that can be found in any city. I challenge all you b’s to b to seek out the local shops in your area that support organic, recycled, re-purposed and biodegradable wares. And don’t forget, bg.com has a registry resource to keep all your cool picks in one convenient place. Cheers!
