My Rock 'n Roll Nights

Hi all! I have to dish a bit about the pretty fabulous rock star gallery opening party I was at Saturday night, here in New York. Kim Gordon, the lead singer and guitar player for the alternative and influential rock band, Sonic Youth, is also an artist who does amazing portraits of faces seen from the stage during performances. On March 8 Kim opened a show of these beautiful watercolors at KSArt Gallery (full disclosure, my husband owns the gallery). Kim actually went to art school in California, and the music world was something she fell into when she moved back to New York after graduating from school.

Watercolor is a difficult medium to work with (I know because I’ve worked with these paints for years). It’s unforgiving—in that it dries quickly and you can’t “cover up” a mistake—you either decide you like it (and it isn’t a mistake) or you set it aside and make another. Kim’s abstracted portraits “depict people in the audience from onstage, looking at them reflected in the light”. Beautifully blurred images appear to be the product of using a lot of water with her paints. They’re also silvery from special metallic inks that she uses.

Kim also created a special soundtrack for the show with her husband Thurston, (since they both constantly love creating music and sound pieces) and is selling those as a limited edition. Sure, Kim has some famous pals and actor Chloë Sevigny came to the opening as well as the model Christie Turlington who mixed with a packed room. If in New York, stop by and see the show, it’s up through April 9.

And if the idea of registering for a piece of artwork as a wedding gift has crossed your mind, give it some serious thought. Living with and looking at an original piece of art versus a poster or print is a completely different experience. Gazing at a watercolor or oil painting, you can see an artist’s hand and brush strokes and light reflected off the textured surfaces that a print or reproduction simply doesn’t have.

Maybe it would be fun to check out some artwork at a local gallery and put it on your wish-I-could-own-that-list. (At bgregistry.com you can set up a registry that includes anything, including artwork from local art galleries). Or maybe you have a talented friend who you might ask to make you a painting for your new home instead of getting something off of your registry. Or maybe you might want to register for a nice set of paints and try your hand at creating something yourself for your new home. At this moment in your life, anything is possible.

Rock on.
