Go Green
Working on the latest Bridal Guide (May/June 2008), our first Green issue, changed my life. My eyes were opened to all the possibilities of updating one’s home, for the betterment of the planet, by incorporating more energy-saving, recycled and earth-friendly products. I saw the “green” light, so to speak, and will forever feel differently about using paper towels and cleaning products that contain bleach, not to mention embracing home decoratives made using reclaimed materials.
Perhaps once upon a time, earth-friendly home products didn’t exactly scream high style, but eco-design has taken a big step forward in recent months. Case in point; one super cool new product I didn’t get to include in the green issue, is the Garbini desktop holder, for pencils, pens and scissors by Umbra.
The design is an award winner by Karim Rashid and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. And it’s made of degradable corn plastic! Never heard of it? OK, me neither, but it’s an amazing new compostable and renewable resource. (4 1/2” x 5” x 6”, $ 5.50; umbra.com). Once one of these containers winds up in a landfill, the plastic will break down, causing less harm to the environment. I’ll raise a recycled glass to that.
