A Fresh Look

One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to update your home is with a fresh coat of paint in a new color. In my living room, I chose a soft yellow shade for three of the walls and nutmeg for the accent wall. Olympic Paint recently came out with a line of eco-conscious interior paints and primers that dry with no lingering odor (so no headaches) and contain zero VOC’s. Quick Bill Nye the Science Guy moment: Volatile organic compounds are toxic and strong enough to vaporize into the air—not good for you or the environment. You spend a tremendous amount of time in your home so why not make it beautiful and more healthy at the same time.

Courtesy of the experts at Olympic, here are some eco-friendly painting tips:

  1. Buy only what you need: Measure your surface area and keep in mind that a gallon of paint will cover about 400 sq. feet.
  2. Use “green” paint: As in theirs, not the color!
  3. Dispose of paint correctly: Never pour paint in the trash or drain. Instead, empty it onto absorbable materials like kitty litter or newspaper, let dry and then throw out.
  4. Donate leftover paint: Ask friends, family, charities or churches if they could use the remainder.

With over 1,200 color options and prices starting at $17/gallon, the possibilities are endless. You can buy Olympic paints at Lowe’s or olympic.com. Cheers!
