Wedding Showdown

Is it wrong to love all manner of wedding shows? I’ve been obsessed with the WE channel’s non-stop wedding coverage. Though I’ve always loved Platinum Weddings and My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding for the sheer extravagance of these multi-hundred thousand dollar celebrations, now I can’t get enough of Rich Bride, Poor Bride. There’s something about the budgetary element that is so interesting to me. I suppose it’s because my fiancé and I are entering into this arena and will soon be having vendor meetings where we discuss packages and deposits and total costs while he suddenly breaks out into hives over the money.

Of course, as of yet, the only wedding budgets I’ve seen featured on the show are upwards of $30,000—which doesn’t exactly scream “Poor bride” to me. It’s funny—I would kill for a budget like that—to be able to get the photographer and the limo? To not have to limit the guest list so dramatically? To allow kids to attend? All of these questions would be answered easily with a bigger budget.

Still, maybe it’s my overdose of those really high-falutin’ wedding shows that has skewed my perception a bit. Seriously, some of these brides spend like $40,000 on flowers. I can’t even fathom that! But still, I want to see the Monique Llullier gowns and the horse drawn carriages and the six-foot-tall monogrammed cakes.

Of course, if I’m being truly honest, I also love to watch the shows for the possible train wreck elements. Sometimes the couples are lovely with a few budget issues. Sometimes the groom is childish or the bride is self-absorbed and shortsighted—and those are the best ones to watch. When you compare yourself to those TV brides and you think, “I’d never behave that way. I’d never be so whiny or difficult or hard on my fiancé/mom/bridesmaid/hapless bystander.”

Okay, so maybe I’ve overanalyzed a little bit. Maybe I just like watching these shows because they’re like moving bridal magazines. There’s flowers and invitations and hanging crystals and jewelry and wedding gowns galore. Right now, I can’t get enough of it.
