Ringing in the Engagement

Awww, the hunt for an engagement ring. If you’re like me, and your beloved didn’t propose on bended knee with a little velvet box in hand, you had to go on the hunt with him to find the absolutely perfect ring. Now, I’m a girl who loves all things that sparkle and I thought I knew a thing or two about rings—um…no. Not at all.

We scoured antique shops, mall jewelry stores, Costco—everywhere to find that perfect ring. Of course, even though my fiancé had done a bit of research before he proposed, he was still struck with complete sticker-shock like, “I can’t believe something so small costs this much!” I think it may come from the guy code of more expensive equals bigger. His big ticket purchases up until then had been big screen TVs, motorcycles, cars—things that pack a big visual punch. Somehow, holding a little ring in his hand, he just couldn’t equate it with the cost of a down payment on a car.

So strangely, shopping became even more stressful for us (but mostly him) as we scoured store after store and couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for. I try not to traffic in stereotypes, but my fiancé definitely fits the one of the man who hates to shop! I had much energy and wanted to find exactly the right ring and he just wanted to find something to show people. I mean, we’d been engaged a few months by this time and every time we told someone new, the first thing they did was ask to see my hand.

Thankfully, we hit a little antique store in Whittier, California and hit on exactly the right one. It’s an antique replica aquamarine center stone, emerald cut, in a white gold filigree setting. It suits my old-fashioned sensibilities perfectly and the stone is so light that in some lights, it looks almost white, while it seems to shine bright blue in others. And I especially love what a colleague pointed out when she saw it. She said, “You already have your something blue.”

Now, the new task is finding a wedding band. We’re waiting on that a bit though. I’m thinking my honey needs a bit more time to prepare for the hunt. ;-)
