Dressing Up

We went dress shopping for the first time this weekend. It was completely unplanned—a sort of spur-of-the-moment thing—just to see what they had. My sister and I took our first foray into an Alfred Angelo salon in Lakewood, California. To my surprise and delight, we were allowed to browse and try on—even without an appointment. The salespeople were so nice and very helpful, though with my sister and maid-of-honor in tow, it was like I had my very own personal shopper. Other customers in the store saw how much help she was giving me and asked her for advice—they thought she worked there too!

Even though I was unprepared to try on dresses (i.e. didn’t have the right undergarments and shoes—the stuff EVERYONE tells you to bring), I thought I’d give it a shot anyway. As a plus-size bride, I was really open to trying on just about anything in my size. I would suggest that to any bride—try it all on, because you never know how it will look on you. What may look uninspired on the hanger could transform you into a goddess. You just never know.

I was able to get a better idea not only of what’s available but what cuts tend to flatter me. I was originally a little scared to trek out into the bridal gown hunt, so I’d postponed it. Just jumping in with no expectations to see what’s out there worked out really well. We definitely plan to go back—this time with an appointment and the right undergarments. And next, time I’m bringing my mom. We’re all waiting for that moment—when you try on the right gown and everybody gets tears in their eyes. Mom wouldn’t want to miss it.
