Dreaming in Color

When you get engaged, right after people ask you to see the ring, people ask: What are your colors? Or, if Steel Magnolias was your reference as a kid for what a big church wedding looked like, it’s more like: “What are your col-uhs, Shelby?”

While Julia Roberts’ colors turned out to be blush and bashful (two shades of pink, one of which is much darker than the other, apparently)…I could not, for the life of me settle on a color scheme for our wedding.

I knew I loved deep, dark, rich tones like wine, crimson, eggplant, deep purple, but I couldn’t settle on just one. I turned to my bridesmaids for help.

Me: “What color do you guys want to wear?”
Them: “Whatever you want.”
Me: “But of these, which do you prefer?”
Them: “Whatever you want. It’s your wedding.”
Me: “Yes, but I want you to be happy and comfortable.”
Them: “We’ll wear whatever you want.”
Me: “Stop being so damn agreeable—help me!!”

Okay, that last sentence was just in my head, but somehow when it came time to settle on a color, once and for all, it definitely came down to just me. Looking through bridal magazines, I finally found a color that leapt out at me. The deep eggplant I saw was so pretty and seemed to fit well with my style. Then I sat on my bed and looked around at all the shades of purple around me. The lilac walls, the purple bedspread, the purple curtains. Then the light bulb—and/or Duh moment happened. Of course it’s purple. Purple has been my signature color forever.

So, finally, we have a color palette. It’s deep purple/eggplant for the bridesmaids, with silver accents. Now that my wedding has an official color scheme, now I do feel like my daydreams have an even lovelier hue.
