The Sweetest Thing

I love a great cause. So when I heard about a New York bakery that’s making cookies and cupcakes for weddings—all while providing economically disadvantaged teen girls with the skills they’ll need to become successful entrepreneurs—I had to spread the news. The Lower Eastside Girls Club, a nonprofit that runs several community-based programs in Lower Manhattan, owns the Sweet Things Bake Shop, where your purchases will benefit inner-city girls of all ages. Its Cookie Academy offers an 8-week course that teaches high school girls the basics of baking and running a small business. Many of these young women have actually gone on to receive culinary degrees from the city’s prestigious Institute of Culinary Education.

I was dazzled by the shop’s cupcake tiers (you can choose from two elegant designs or create your own style)—a wonderful alternative to your wedding cake or centerpiece for your dessert table. The hand-decorated butter cookies are a popular choice for bridal shower and wedding favors, and bulk orders of their organic chocolate bars can include custom labels. I may not be getting married anytime soon (unless I meet my soul mate—today), but I’ll definitely keep these goodies in mind for special occasions and, of course, the occasional treat.

And a Fond Farewell…
On a separate note, I just want to let all of you loyal Bridalguide.com brides (and grooms!) know that this will be my very last blog for the website, since I’m leaving my post as the magazine’s associate editor. Boo hoo! It’s been so much fun seeking out and sharing some of the latest bridal buzz with everyone. Alas, all good things must come to an end. But just like you, I’ll still be reading the fabulous anecdotes from Elena and the rest of the BG bloggers. Here, my parting words: So long, farewell…and happy planning!
