Saving Receipts, Trees & Your Sanity
After nearly three weeks in the city, I decided to work on my budgeting skills. My bank account was dwindling, and I wanted to see where my money was going. I mean, I had a general idea (Pinkberry is three blocks away from my apartment and DSW is less than two…), but the little expenses were adding up much more quickly than I thought. Shoeboxed seemed like a great way to start my new budgeting plan, and it would also be a great tool for brides who are organizing their weddings: It’s a website where you can either scan or mail in your receipts for digital organization.

Once your receipts are up on the site, you can sort them into customizable “shoebox” categories (mine were food, clothes, beauty/health and miscellaneous, but you could totally use titles like Photographer, Favors, etc.). Then it’s ridiculously easy to find old receipts without sorting through piles and piles of paper, and you can keep track of how much you’re spending and what you’re spending it on with just the click of a mouse. Maybe the “budgeting” part of the wedding will be the easiest part to handle!
The basic Shoeboxed account is free (it includes do-it-yourself scanning and organizing), or you can upgrade to receipt mail-in for $9.95/month, where they will scan your receipts for you. Shoeboxed will also provide you with an email address for the site, which allows you to have any digital receipts sent directly to your Shoeboxed account instead of your personal email address. And the added bonus in all this? With fewer paper receipts, you’re saving trees!
A word of warning, though: I had a tricky time accessing Shoeboxed through Internet Explorer; you might have to use Mozilla Firefox if you want to get these cool organizing tools.
