Poetic License

love poems by pablo neruda

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to think of wonderful tokens of love you can give your partner for life—on this super-romantic occasion or as a wedding present. And I’ve got just the thing. The latest and greatest item to come across my desk is Love Poems by Pablo Neruda (he’s the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean writer who—now literally—wrote the book on love). This just-released pocket-sized edition, translated by Donald D. Walsh, is filled with some of the poet’s most passionate, sensually charged words—written in both Spanish and English. Here’s a taste:

My love,
we have found each other
thirsty and we have
drunk up all the water and the blood,
we found each other
hungry
and we bit each other
as fire bites,
leaving wounds in us.

—Excerpt from Absence by Pablo Neruda

If that doesn’t get you in the mood for romance, then, um, you might have to check your pulse. Before presenting to your beloved, don’t forget to write a little something special on the inside cover—an oh-so-sentimental touch!

Are you giving your fiancé a wedding gift? If so, please share it with us!
