I’m sure you’re picturing an elegant, tasteful wedding. But after you’re pronounced husband and wife, maybe you want to let loose. Here at Bridal Guide, we’ve been hearing about couples doing just that—and having their wedding photographers there to capture their big-day hijinx!

Yes, some creative photogs are shooting couples wearing their wedding duds in the desert, running through the streets of New York, swimming underwater—doing just about anything that Mom and Dad wouldn’t have dreamed of doing in their formal photos. (Some call these shots “trash the dress” photos, but we don’t like that term, well, because we adore wedding dresses—and they don’t necessarily get “trashed” during these photo shoots.)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Roberto Falck, who runs a boutique photography studio in Brooklyn and specializes in photographing couples underwater. Falck, who is a diver, started shooting underwater a couple of years ago while on location in the Caribbean. Check out the above pic of a couple taking the plunge!

Falck says wedding photography has taken a more “fashion-y” turn in recent years, veering away from the traditional and letting the couple star in their own magazine-style photo shoot. I guess this gels with my theory that everyone wants to be a star these days (see earlier blog post on wedding paparazzi, etc.) Other popular locations for Falck to shoot besides underwater include the beach and the city. And since he’s based in Brooklyn, what more dramatic location to choose if not the Brooklyn Bridge?

Falck usually arrives about an hour before a wedding to document the preparation, in order to put together a comprehensive “wedding story.” But for the creative outdoor photos, he usually schedules an after-wedding-day session with the couple. Most of the underwater work is done in swimming pools in the New York area. (But only during the summer—brrr!!)

So go ahead, start dreaming up some fun ways for you and your fiancé to let loose—and be sure you find the right photographer to help you pull it off!
