Marrying in Puerto Rico

It’s no wonder that destination weddings are so popular. Couples are pretty keen on the idea of flying off to a tropical paradise to wed—and bringing their nearest and dearest with them (or not)! Fortunately, I was able to do some hands-on research on destination nuptials in beautiful Puerto Rico. Yes, my job is tough, but I gotta do what I gotta do to give you the inside scoop.

Puerto Rico is a pretty easy place to travel since US citizens don’t need passports, and there are direct flights from all over the East Coast. But what struck me most about PR are all the breathtaking places you can have your ceremony, like these:

rio mar

Rio Mar Beach Resort has the best beach set-up I saw. Marrying on the sand is more complicated in highly populated areas of PR because the beaches are public, and a permit is necessary. I would recommend this resort for a laid-back couple that wants something casual and is okay with being around swimsuit-clad vacationers while they’re in their finery.

gran melia

Gran Melia Puerto Rico has a few different spots where you can have a gorgeous ceremony. The most popular is the domed “Wedding Chapel” pictured above. Dinner can also be set up inside the chapel (and by the way, the food gets a thumbs up from me).

hacienda siesta alegre

One of my favorites is Hacienda Siesta Alegre. It’s an impeccably decorated Spanish-style private home and horse farm hidden away in the hills. Perfect if you want a one-of-a-kind event in a secluded place. The ceremony site is a lawn that overlooks the rainforest, and there are so many other spaces you can utilize, including a poolside area (cocktails), terraces (dinner) and Spanish-style courtyard (dancing).

el conquistador

el conquistador

El Conquistador Resort has two great settings for outdoor ceremonies. Casitas Gardens (at left) is an intimate location with an amazing view and a Zen-ish garden (you can see it if you look closely off to the left). The trellises—those huge columns in the photo on the right—is a more grand photo op, if you’re going for high impact. What’s best about El Conquistador is that it offers fun for guests of all ages: it has its own water park, plus you can take a ferry ride over to its private island or even to nearby St. Thomas.

el convento

My other fave is Hotel El Convento. This boutique hotel is a former convent built in1646 located right in Old San Juan. And what a romantic, historic city to be married in, with all that quaint Spanish and French architecture! Restaurants for the rehearsal dinner are within walking distance, and wedding guests will love shopping the boutiques or taking a tour of the nearby forts during their downtime.

Now I just need to find a couple who wants to get married in Puerto Rico and will invite me as their guest. I can’t wait to go back!

I *heart* destination weddings!
I often work with couples who are having destination weddings, and I often secretly wish that I too was invited along for the festivities!! Most of them are getting married in the most stunning of locations ... I personally opted for Tuscany, Italy for my own destination wedding. It was fab! Cheers, Crissy par avion design
