Love Songs Say So Much

OK, I admit it: I’m a sap. I love cheesy romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle and other so-called chick flicks—I completely lost it after watching The Notebook, and don’t even get me started on Atonement. (Thank goodness for dark movie theaters!) So, naturally, I’m a sucker for great, heartfelt love songs—from soulful classics to today’s angst-ridden melodies. If you’re like me, you’ll be just as excited to hear about the newest CD compilations from Legacy Recordings (a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment), released as part of its Beautiful Ballads & Love Songs series. The five new volumes feature, respectively, the music of jazz great Miles Davis, “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin, chanteuse Billie Holiday, beloved showman Barry Manilow and “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” himself, Frank Sinatra.

If you’re looking for a timeless first-dance song or want to play tunes at your reception that guests of all ages can sway to, you’re bound to find some gems in these collections. My favorites include Franklin’s “Never Leave You Again,” produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Holiday’s bluesy “More Than You Know.” Other songs you might want to add to your playlist: Manilow’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and Sinatra’s version of George and Ira Gerwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me.” (One or more of Miles’ instrumental ballads, such as “I Thought About You,” could play as the prelude to your ceremony or during the cocktail hour.) Or, hey, pack some of these super-romantic selections for your honeymoon—and let your happily ever after begin. Tell us, what are your top love songs?
