Flower Power

I’m so excited about this initiative I just heard about called The Flower Project. It’s a creative new collaboration between Great Performances, a catering and event company in NYC, Botanica, a floral design company, and Just Food, a non-profit dedicated to food justice and sustainability. In order to prevent wasting all the flower arrangements that typically get thrown away after a wedding, Botanica designs potted floral centerpieces that are made from locally grown, pesticide-free plants. And Great Performances has started to offer these pieces as an option at some of their events, including weddings.

If a bride chooses to use one of these arrangements (and why wouldn’t you? They’re beautiful!), they don’t go to waste after the reception’s end. Instead, they are donated to community gardens and to The Sylvia Center, an educational center located on Katchkie Farm (which is owned by Great Performances and teaches at-risk kids about sustainable agriculture). So the flowers that everyone gushed about at your reception can look just as pretty in a garden somewhere in New York where even more people get to enjoy them. It’s a win-win situation.

Great Performances holds weddings in absolutely beautiful venues (their website has a gallery you should definitely look at) where you can choose this sustainable option. But if you’re not in the New York area, consider asking your florist to create something similar for your bash. A local community garden might be happy to accept your post-bash wedding flowers. And if you can’t find one that is, you can always plant them right in your own backyard.

This is a fabulous idea for not only creating a beautiful reception, but a beautiful world.

What a great idea! The only problem with beautiful, one-day events is that everything is used for just . . . one day. The more you find stuff like this that promotes less waste, the better. Keep up your GREEN thumb!!
